Softball Notches Doubleheader Sweep Against Visiting UMass Dartmouth

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College claimed both games by one run in a non-conference doubleheader against UMass Dartmouth Thursday night in Milton. The Colonels took the opener in nine innings, 5-4, while also taking game two, 3-2. Curry improves to 15-11, while the Corsairs now stand at 9-17.

GAME ONE
In Game One, both teams put runs on the board early. In the opening frame, UMass Dartmouth scored on an error followed by an RBI off the bat of senior Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, Mass.) to take an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, the Colonels capitalized on a throwing error to cut the deficit to one (2-1). After three scoreless innings, Curry tied the game in the fifth inning. Junior Heather Carrier (Scarborough, Maine) recorded the RBI with a sacrifice bunt.

In the top of the eighth, the Corsairs reclaimed the lead after freshman Shannon Orton (Swansea, Mass.) dropped a sacrifice bunt to bring home a run. The Colonels answered in the bottom half of the frame with their own run on an error to tie the game at 3-3. In the following inning, UMass Dartmouth sophomore Jenna Sylvia (New Bedford, Mass.) hit an RBI single to right to give the Corsairs a 4-3 edge. In the bottom of the ninth, senior Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.) and sophomore Allie Carver (Marlboro, Mass.) both recorded RBI singles to help Curry claim the 5-4 victory.

Sophomore Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) improved to 6-5 on the season. In nine innings pitched, she recorded three strikeouts while allowing one earned run on eight hits. Freshman Shannon Orton (Swansea, Mass.) absorbed the loss, falling to 3-8. She surrendered eight hits and one earned run while striking out six in her 8.1 innings of work.

GAME TWO
In Game Two, the Colonels put the first run on the board after sophomore Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. UMass Dartmouth plated two runs in the third inning, highlighted by an RBI double to center off the bat of sophomore Becky Williams (Hope Valley, R.I.). Curry tied the game in the bottom of the frame after Maderios recorded an RBI single to center.

Both teams remained scoreless throughout the following three innings. In the top half of the seventh frame, junior Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) recorded three straight outs for the Colonels. Curry scored the game winning run in the bottom of the inning after LaRosa recorded her second RBI of the game with a single to left. Lundstrom went the distance and picked up the win (5-5), allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out four. Williams took the loss (3-4), allowing 10 hits and one earned run in 6.1 innings of work.

Both teams return to action at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Curry hosts Nichols in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader, while the Corsairs travel to UMass Boston for a conference doubleheader.
