Softball Earns a Split with Visiting Salve Regina in CCC Doubleheader Action
MILTON, Mass. – Salve Regina and Curry split a doubleheader in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball action Sunday afternoon in Milton. The Seahawks (15-9, 8-2 CCC) grabbed the opener, 4-3, before the Colonels (12-10, 5-5 CCC) rebounded to capture the nightcap, 5-2.

In Game 1, Salve Regina scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings to establish a 4-0 lead. The first-inning run came courtesy of an RBI single from senior Megan Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.). The third-inning tally came off the bat of Jakiela as well. She doubled home junior Marissa Simpson (Brimfield, Mass.) who had led off the inning with a base hit. The Seahawks would post two more runs, thanks to run-scoring single and a solo home run, both off the bat of senior Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.).

Curry rallied in the bottom of the sixth to close to within 4-3, as junior Taryn Vigeant (Terryville, Conn.) knocked in a pair with a base hit, and sophomore Abby Macomber (Milton, Mass.) picked up a run-scoring infield single. But that was as close as the Colonels would come.

Jakiela (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Quintana (3-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) were the hitting stars for Salve Regina. Senior pitcher Jen Cruver (15-8) went the distance, allowing seven hits, no walks and two earned runs, while striking out four.

In addition to Vigeant and Macomber, Curry got a multi-hit effort (2-for-3) from junior Kaitlyn Maderios (East Bridgewater, Mass.). In a complete-game loss, junior Jennifer Lundstrom surrendered 11 hits, three walks and four earned runs, while fanning 11.

In Game 2, it was the Colonels who broke on top, with a pair of runs in the first, and another in the third. Maderios walked with the bases loaded in the first, and later in the frame, senior Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.) had an RBI single. Sophomore Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) led off the third with a triple and came home on a Carney RBI groundout.

The Seahawks got on the board in the fourth when a Cruver groundout allowed junior Sara Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) to cross the plate. But LaRosa put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, launching a two-run home run over the centerfield fence.

The Curry offense was paced by LaRosa (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI), Carney (1-for-3, 2 RBI) and junior Megan Flaherty (3-for-3, 2 R). Freshman Melissa Donoghue (3-1) picked up the complete-game victory, allowing 10 hits, one walk and two earned runs, while striking out four.

Salve Regina got two-hit efforts from Quintana, senior Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.), sophomore Lauren Nicholson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), and freshman Melissa Figueiredo (East Bridgewater, Mass.). Cruver took the loss to fall to 15-9. She went six innings, giving up eight hits, one walk, and five earned runs while striking out two.

Both teams resume play on Tuesday with non-conference road doubleheaders. Curry visits Suffolk (3 p.m.) while the Seahawks travel to Rhode Island College (4 p.m.)
