Softball Splits a Non-Conference Doubleheader with Visiting Newbury
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College and Newbury College split a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Milton. The Nighthawks captured the opener, 7-1, while the Colonels bounced back in the nightcap, 5-0. Curry moves to 6-6 on the season, while Newbury now stands at 4-8.

In Game One, the Nighthawks plated five first-inning runs to put the game out of reach. The big blow came off the bat of freshman Alyssa Donovan, who drove in a pair with a single to center. Newbury went on to add three unearned runs thanks to a pair of Colonels’ errors.

An RBI single by freshman Taylor Foley in the top of the third stretched the visitors’ advantage to 6-0. Curry notched its only run of the game in the bottom of the third, as junior Taryn Vigeant stroked an RBI-double to right, scoring freshman Amy Nolan. Junior Katie Haney’s run-scoring single in the top of the fifth closed out the scoring in the opener.

Donovan and freshman pitcher Michaela McGowan each collected a pair of hits for the Nighthawks. McGowan (3-5) picked up the complete-game win, allowing five hits, four walks and one earned run, while striking out four over seven innings. Freshman Melissa Donoghue (1-1) absorbed the loss for the Colonels, surrendering eight hits, one walk, and four earned runs, while striking out two in her seven innings of work.

In Game Two, Curry sophomore Taylor Ahearn tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout, and classmates Ariel LaRosa and Allie Carver each contributed a third-inning RBI, as the Colonels earned the doubleheader split.

Curry junior Megan Flaherty scored a first-inning run and laced a fourth-inning RBI single, while classmate Paige Smigiel went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles. Ahearn (3-2) struck out nine over seven innings, walking just two.

Senior Rebecca Roach (1-4) went the distance for Newbury, giving up seven hits, one walk, and two earned runs.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, hosting CCC rival Eastern Nazarene in an 11:00 a.m. twin bill. The Nighthawks resume play on April 3, hosting Bay Path in a single 3:00 p.m. contest played at Lasell College.
