Softball Opens CCC Schedule with a Pair of Losses at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Curry College Sunday afternoon in both teams' Commonwealth Coast Conference opener, winning by scores of 4-3 and 7-3.

Despite playing at home, the Hawks batted as the visiting team in both games, as the contests were originally scheduled to be played at Curry but were then moved to Rhode Island due to field conditions.

In the opener, Curry jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, when Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) knocked in Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.) with an RBI single. The Colonels’ advantage lasted until the third, when Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) gave RWU the lead with a deep home run to left field, scoring herself and Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) for a 2-1 lead.

In the sixth, the Hawks added one more run when Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.) came in on an RBI double by Peoples.

Curry (5-5) would come back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, beginning with an RBI fielder’s choice by Taryn Vigeant (Terryville, Conn.) with the bases loaded. LaRosa later scored on an attempted double steal, with Tierney throwing out Amy Nolan (Norfolk, Mass.).

Roger Williams regained the lead in the top of the seventh, with Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) bringing home Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) with a sac fly to center. A 1-2-3 inning for Curry in the bottom of the frame secured the win for RWU.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) earned the win for the Hawks, allowing three runs in seven innings with seven strikeouts. Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Peoples was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) took the loss, giving up four runs in the complete game with four strikeouts. Allie Carver (Marlborough, Mass.) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, while LaRosa finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the nightcap, Roger Williams took the lead early, with Alicea scoring Tierney in the top of the first with an RBI single. The Hawks added three more runs in the third, with Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.), Atkinson, and Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) each contributing an RBI in the inning.

The Colonels cut the deficit in half in the fourth, with Vigeant and Kaitlyn Maderios (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scoring on a bases-loaded hit by Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.).

However, the Hawk offense continued to rally, with RWU tacking on a run in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. The Colonels managed one run in the sixth, but were unable to come any closer as the Hawks completed the sweep.

Milano went the distance for her first career win at RWU, allowing three unearned runs in seven innings with two strikeouts. Atkinson finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Alicea added three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) gave up seven runs (six earned) in the game while striking out six. Maderios and Carney each finished 2-for-3 in the game, with Maderios scoring two runs and Carney adding an RBI.

Roger Williams (3-9) will take on UMass-Dartmouth Wednesday on the road, while Curry hosts Salem State Tuesday. (Recap courtesy of RWU Sports Information)
