Quarterfinals Loss Eliminates Men's Tennis

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Curry College men's tennis team fell in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels dropped the shortened match by a score of 6-0 to the Hawks of Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.

The hosts won each of the three doubles matches then went on to close out three singles matches before the remaining trio were left unfinished. Roger Williams improves to 7-5 overall while the Colonels close out the season with a record of 4-15.

The first doubles pair of freshman Dan Tocco (East Quogue, N.Y.) and junior Brendan White (Old Lyme, Conn.) took the first point by a score of 8-3 over junior Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) and senior Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.). Juniors Miles Conlin (Branford, Conn.) and Thomas O'Leary (North Easton, Mass.) matched the 8-3 score to beat freshman Lorenzo Russo (Lynnfield, Mass.) and senior Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) at second doubles. Freshman Tyler Cain (Montpelier, Vt.) and junior Jake Cole (Sterling, Va.) made quick work of the third doubles match, topping Curry seniors Joshua Bernstein (Cherry Hills, N.J.) and Daniel Ritucci (Middleboro, Mass.) 6-0.

At third singles, O'Leary topped Hefler in straight sets, with each ending 6-1. Junior Matty Feldman (Duxbury, Mass.) beat Ritucci 6-1, 6-2 to take singles No. 5. Freshman Arlex Correa (Lynnfield, Mass.) grabbed the Hawks' final point by taking down freshman Timothy O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) 6-0, 6-2 in the six spot. At first singles, White led Roach 6-4, 1-0, at second, Tocco led Stento 7-6, and at fourth Cole led Russo 6-0, 5-4, but each of these three matches were left unfinished.

With the sweep, Roger Williams advances to play in the semifinals of the CCC tournament. Their next match-up will come on Wednesday, May 1 at Western New England University. In the regular season, the Hawks fell to the Golden Bears by a score of 7-2. Start time is yet to be determined.
