Roach Wins at Singles and Doubles in Loss to Salem State

SALEM, Mass. –  Salem State University won two of the three doubles points and five of the six singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over Curry College on Wednesday afternoon in non-league men's tennis action at the Central Campus Courts.

The Vikings improved to 5-4 overall with the win. Senior Chen Chen (Lawrence, Mass.), junior Mitchell Dyer (North Attleboro, Mass.), junior Noah Hodgkins (Winthrop, Mass.), and freshman Johnson Ngandjui (Lynn, Mass.) each recorded wins in both doubles and singles.

Curry (3-12 overall) received its singles point from junior Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) at No. 1. Roach captured his second point of the day as he paired with senior Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.) for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.

Roach earned his singles point getting by sophomore Andrew Muttiah (Colombo, Sri Lanka) in straight sets 6-1 and 6-3.

Chen and Dyer edged senior Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) and freshman Lorenzo Russo (Lynnfield, Mass.). Hodgkins and Ngandjui paired for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

In the remaining singles matches sophomore Roni Bazile (Brockton, Mass.) defeated Stento at No. 2 by finals of 6-4 and 6-2.  Dyer dispatched Hefler at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win. Chen got by Russo with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Hodgkins won by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores over freshman Timothy O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) at No. 5. Ngandjui blanked Curry's Ali Pungi at No. 6 singles to close out the victory.

Curry returns to action at home against Thomas College on Saturday, April 20 at 1:00 p.m. Salem State will next play at Castleton University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
