Men's Tennis Stumbles at Western New England, 9-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Western New England University picked up a 9-0 victory over Curry College on Wednesday afternoon at the Volvo Outdoor Courts in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup.

The Golden Bears improved 7-3 overall and to 3-1 in the CCC. Western New England took two of the three doubles matches by 8-0 finals before taking all six singles points.

The best singles match of the day came at the top spot between WNEU junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Curry junior Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.). Kalmer took the first set by a 7-5 score before Roach rebounded to win 6-4 in the second. In lieu of a third set, the two played a 10-point tiebreaker which Kalmer won 10-7.

The remaining five singles matches all ended in straight sets. No other Golden Bear player lost more than two games in any set, with senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) each triumphing by 6-0, 6-0 finals.

Curry (3-9 overall, 1-3 CCC) returns home to host UMass Boston in a non-league match at 3:30 p.m. Western New England hosts Endicott on Saturday, April 13 at noon.
