Men's Tennis Grabs First Win, Edges Bridgewater State 5-4

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's tennis team secured its first win of the season with a 5-4 over Bridgewater State University on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Colonels improved to 1-6 overall while the Bears dropped to 1-2 overall.

Curry came out of the gate strong, jumping out to a quick 2-1 advantage in doubles play. Junior Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) and senior Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.) knocked off sophomore William Jones (Wrexham, United Kingdom) and senior Alexander Belinsky (Norton, Mass.), 8-6, in first doubles. Senior Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) and freshman Lorenzo Russo (Lynnfield, Mass.) took second doubles by an 8-4 final over freshman Colin Lamusta (Lynnfield, Mass.) and freshman Kendan DeBlois (Hadley, N.Y.).

Bridgewater State picked up one point in the final doubles pairing. Junior Joshua Bean (Kingston, Mass.) and senior Stephen Reddington (West Bridgewater, Mass.) defeated senior Joshua Bernstein (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman Timothy O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.), 8-3.

In the singles portion of the competition, momentum stayed in the direction of the Colonels. Roach topped Jones in straight sets 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 1. Lamusta got by Stento at No. 2 by a 6-4, 6-2 final. Russo breezed past Belinsky by identical scores of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. DeBlois and Reddington each took their respective points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, as the contest was tied 4-4.  

In the deciding match at No. 3 singles, Hefler edged Bean in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 7-5) to secure the victory for the Colonels.

Curry will remain home and will host two teams on Saturday. They will play Nichols at 10:30 a.m., followed by Lesley at 1:30 p.m. Bridgewater State hosts Salem State on Saturday at noon.
