Men's Tennis Stumbles Against Johnson & Wales, 8-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's tennis team fell to visiting Johnson & Wales University by an 8-1 final on Thursday afternoon at the Big Nine Tennis Courts. With the win, the Wildcats sit at 2-4 overall while the Colonels slip to 1-12 on the season.

Johnson & Wales started the match with a 3-0 sweep of doubles play. The first doubles team of Ryan Schiele (Lusby, Md.) and Gianni Rodrigues (Milton, Mass.) topped Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) and Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) by an 8-3 result. The second doubles tandem of Alexander Rohana (Providence, R.I.) and Gunner Mahoney (Honolulu, Hawaii) defeated the Curry team of Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.) and Nicholas Piotrowski (Groveland, Mass.) by an 8-3 final while Jack Hopkins (Hamilton, Mass.) and Marco Saldierna (Lawrenceville, Ga.) captured the sweep for the Wildcats with an 8-3 victory over the Colonel pair of Zach Muller (Methuen, Mass.) and Daniel Ritucci (Middleboro, Mass.) at third doubles.

The Colonels went on to win one of six singles points. Roach topped Schiele at number one by just surrendering two games 6-2, 6-0 at first singles. Rodrigues edged Stento 7-5, 7-6 (4) at the second singles. Rohana got by Hefler at third singles 6-1, 6-3 while Mahoney only gave up one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Piotrowski at fourth singles spot. Hopkins won by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores over Muller at number five while Saldierna captured the point at number six over Ritucci 6-3 and 7-5.

Curry will next play at Roger Williams on Saturday at noon. Johnson & Wales will host Norwich on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
