Men's Tennis Bested By UMass Boston in Season Opener, 6-3

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Curry College men's tennis team fell to non-conference opponent UMass-Boston, 6-3 in their season opener at the USTA National Campus in Orlando on Sunday morning. The loss drops the Colonels to 0-1 while the Beacons improve to 1-3 overall.

UMass-Boston swept all three doubles matches from Curry to start the day. Josh Bhasin (Tulsa, Okla.) and Austin DeLasse (Mexico City, Mexico) picked up an 8-5 victory at the number one spot over the Colonel tandem of Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) and Ryan Sullivan (Winnetka, Ill.). Alexander Comerchero (Brookline, Mass.) and Tin Tran (Quincy, Mass.) secured a 9-7 win at second doubles over Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) and Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.). The Beacons completed the sweep when Ray Platteel (Holbrook, Mass.) and Guang Huang (Quincy, Mass.) defeated Ben Higgins (Yarmouth, Maine) and Zach Muller (Methuen, Mass.) at third doubles.

Curry responded in singles play, grabbing three of the six matches. The Colonels No. 1 singles player, Roach outlasted DeLasse in a third set tiebreak, 4-6, 6-2, 14-12 to pick up his first collegiate victory.  Curry's No. 2 singles player Sullivan claimed his tilt verse Bhasin, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 to win his first career match. In No. 3 singles, Stento bested Comerchero by a retirement for his first career victory as well. Fourth and fifth singles spots were claimed in straight sets by the Beacons while Muller fell in a third set tiebreak 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Curry continues their Florida trip Monday against Illinois Wesleyan at a time to be announced. UMass Boston faces University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 3:00 p.m. at the Beerman Tennis Center in Lakeland, Fla.
