Men's Tennis Shut Out 9-0 at League Rival Nichols

POMFRET, Conn. - Seniors Justin DeLuca (Mashpee, Mass.) and Dan Roman (Tolland, Conn.), along with sophomore Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.), each scored straight set shutout wins in singles action as the Nichols College men's tennis team scored a 9-0 win over Curry College Saturday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Pomfret Tennis Courts.

Nichols (15-1, 5-0 CCC) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams both won 8-1. Halpern and freshman James Smith (Monte Sereno, Calif.) defeated senior Lucas Donaway (Foxboro, Mass.) and junior Joe Berger (Middleboro, Mass.) at No. 2 doubles while at No. 3 doubles Roman and junior Andrew Haas (Whitinsville, Mass.) beat freshman Corey Flax (Potomac, Md.) and senior Frank LaMotte (Chestertown, Md.).

The Colonels (2-11, 1-4 CCC) played their best match of the day at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Valvel Temin (Swampscott, Mass.) and sophomore Toma Blatchford (Westmount, Quebec) went back and forth with freshman Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and sophomore Carlos De La Cruz (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) before falling to the Bison duo 8-5.

The Bison kept the momentum going by winning in straight sets in each of the singles matches. Castillo defeated Temin 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles while De La Cruz knocked off Berger 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Maurice Thomas-Riley (Norwalk, Conn.) picked up his first collegiate victory at No. 6 singles, defeating Flax 6-0, 6-2.

The Bison continue conference-play on Tuesday when they travel to take on Wentworth at 4:00 p.m. Curry host conference foe Endicott College Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. (Recap courtesy of Nichols Sports Information)
