Men's Soccer Bested by Wentworth 3-0 in CCC Quarterfinals

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to help pace the second-seeded Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over seventh-seeded Curry in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Commonwealth Coast Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.

With the win the Leopards improve to 12-3-4 on the season and will host either third-seeded Gordon or second-seeded Nichols in a semifinal round game on Wednesday night.

Wentworth put a shot on net in the second minute, which was saved by freshman Paul DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.). On the leopards' next shot attempt, Martins tallied the only goal the hosts would need. Senior Matt Sanchez (Salem, N.H.) sent a pass from the left side to Martins in front of the net. Martins put home the shot at 3:46 mark.

The Leopards continued to apply pressure, however were only able to get the one goal before halftime. Wentworth had a 12-6 shot advantage at the break with seven of the 12 attempts going on target.

In the 64th minute, Curry nearly tied the game, however a foul in the box negated the shot attempt.

Martins added to the lead at the 72:19 mark when he scored his second of the game and 15th of the season. Freshman Diego Panayotti (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) sent a ball to Martins who took a shot from the right side, which bounced off the left post and crossed the line.

Wentworth rounded out the scoring with 8:24 left on freshman Joe Limoli's (Peabody, Mass.) first collegiate goal. Limoli took a pass from classmate Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J) and one-timed it to the left.

Sophomore Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) made three saves to pick up the win. DeMaio made one save in 8:14, freshman Mike Russo-Penta (Malden, Mass.) made eight saves in 73:22, and senior Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) played the final 8:24.

The Colonels see their season come to an end with a 6-13-1 record.
