Men's Soccer Shut Out 5-0 by Visiting CCC Foe Gordon College

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team lost to visiting Gordon College, 5-0,on Saturday night at the Walter M. Katz Field in Commonwealth Coast Conference action. The loss drops the Colonels to 6-11-1 on the season and 2-5-1 in the CCC while the Fighting Scots improve to 11-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play.

Senior Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) tallied four points on four assists to help lead Gordon to a shutout victory.  Three of Cole's helpers came in the first half as the Scots took a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.  Gordon got on the board early into the match with just 5:36 off the clock.  The Scots were awarded a corner kick taken by Cole.  Cole placed the ball right in front of the net and classmate Sammy Wilson (Ansonia, Conn.) one-timed it past the Colonels senior goalkeeper Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.).  Gordon extended their lead by two seven minutes later after Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) received the ball from Cole and drilled it into the back of the net.  Cole earned his third assist on the night off another corner kick at the 16:46 minute mark.  Cole sent the ball into the 18-yard box and freshman Matt Chartier (Concord, N.H.) headed it into the top right corner for his eighth goal on the season.  Curry got just one shot on net over the first 45 minutes of action.

The Colonels junior Eric Miller (Hanover, Mass.) had a chance to get his team on the board after receiving a pass in the air just in front of the net.  Miller headed the ball but the Scots senior goaltender Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) came up with the diving save to hold Curry scoreless.

The Colonels played a strong second half, controlling most of the action.  Curry outshot Gordon 6-3 but struggled to find the back of the net.  The Colonels landed just one shot on net while the Scots landed all three with two resulting in goals.

Curry's junior Ben Silvia (Dartmouth, Mass.) opened the frame with a hard shot from just outside the box.  Spoonhour was in position and made a nice jumping save to help secure his shutout.  The Scots got the ball quickly down the field and earned their first of five corner kicks at the 47:16 minute mark.  Cole was given the kick which he sent directly into a Curry defender who booted it out.  Cole's second corner kick was just seconds later and this one resulted in a score.  At 47:44, Gordon put up their fourth goal of the match.  Cole's corner kick found the head of freshman Noah Craig (Granger, Ind.) who tallied his first collegiate-goal.  Their fifth and final score of the game came with just about 34 minutes remaining in regulation.  Junior Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) collected a through pass sent by Beveridge and stuck it low into the back of net.  The Colonels finished the half with five more shots and a corner kick but strong defensive play by the Scots left Curry scoreless.

Johnson made five saves in goal for the Colonels in the loss.  Spoonhour made two stops in the win for the Scots in 59:54 minutes before giving way to sophomore Nate Weaver (Westfield, Mass).  Weaver faced zero shots in 30:06 minutes.

Curry returns to action in their final regular season game when they travel to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m.  Gordon plays in their last game of the regular season also on Tuesday when they host CCC opponent Endicott in a 7:00 p.m. start.
