Men’s Soccer Claims First CCC Victory, Downs UNE 2-1

MILTON, Mass.- The Curry College Men's Soccer team defeated the University of New England, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win the Colonels improve to 5-8-1 overall while the Nor'easters fall to 2-7-4 on the season.

The first half was controlled by Curry holding a slight advantage in shots at 11-10.  The Colonels were able to finish two shots compared to one. UNE's senior goalkeeper Elijah Leverett (North Yarmouth, Maine) was in net for the Nor'easters making seven saves.  Mike Russo-Penta (Malden, Mass.) was the netminder for Curry as he came up with six saves. 

The Colonels jumped on the board early in the match when just 19 second in, Ben Silvia sent a pass into the box right in front of the net, where senior midfielder Steven DePina (Stoughton, Mass.) collected the pass and finished the shot to give Curry the very early 1-0 advantage.

In the 28th minute, the Colonels tacked on another goal to their lead when Christian Mancini (Woodbury, Conn.) scored his second goal of the season to give Curry the 2-0 lead going into the intermission.

The University of New England outshot the Colonels in the second half, 10-2.  They cut into the deficit in the 81st minute when Ryan Stephens (Stow, Mass) recorded his second goal of the season to trim the Curry lead to just one goal. Over the final nine minutes, the Nor'easters were unable to find the equalizer.

Curry returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Westfield State University at 7:00 p.m. in their final non-conference match-up of the season.  UNE heads to Colby College on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. match.
