Men's Soccer Battles Roger Williams to a 2-1 Overtime Loss in CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team battled visiting Roger Williams University to a 2-1 overtime loss in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match-up Saturday night at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the loss, the Colonels record falls to 3-8-1 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play. With the win, the Hawks improve to 4-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.

Despite Curry having a slight advantage in shots, 8-4, in the first half, it was RWU who struck first.  The Hawks took the 1-0 lead at the 34:36 minute mark. Roger Williams's freshman Nicholas Sanchez (Franklin, Mass.) netted his first collegiate goal to give his team the go-ahead score.  Sanchez was unassisted after one-timing the ball into the back of the net past the glove of the Colonels freshman goalkeeper Mike Russo-Penta (Malden, Mass.).  The Hawks junior goalkeeper Nick Nelson (Madison, Conn.) was strong between the pipes holding Curry scoreless with five saves.  Russo-Penta made two stops in the half.  The Colonels also had the advantage in corner kicks, 4-1.

Curry was on the attack for most of the second half once again outshooting RWU, 8-3.  The Hawks defense was playing strong and aggressive making every effort to hold onto the one goal lead.  However, with 10:02 left to play in regulation the Colonels junior Ben Silvia (Dartmouth, Mass.) tied the match at 1-1.  Silvia fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box into the top corner.  Over the next 10 minutes left to play both teams played hard to get the winning tally but came up short forcing the squads into overtime.  Nelson made three saves in the half while Russo-Penta made just one stop.  RWU led in corner kicks, 3-2.

It took only 3:51 minutes and one shot into the first overtime for the Hawks to net the game-winning goal.  Junior Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) collected a long through ball inside the 18-yard box and went one-on-one with Russo-Penta.  Russo-Penta came out sliding to make the save but Janson was able to get a touch on the ball and send it into the back of the net.

The Colonels Russo-Penta made three saves in goal for the loss. Janson earned the win in net making eight saves for the Hawks.

Curry returns to the pitch on Monday, October 3 when the welcome visiting Lasell College in non-conference action. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.  RWU plays host to non-conference opponent Bridgewater State on Wednesday, October 5 in a 7:00 p.m. game start.
