Men's Soccer Second Half Surge Falls Short as they are Edged 2-1 by Visiting Newbury

MILTON, Mass-The Curry College Men's Soccer team fell to visiting Newbury College, 2-1 at Walter M. Katz Field on Wednesday night.The loss drops the Colonels to 3-7-1 overall while the Nighthawks improve to 8-3-1 on the season.

Newbury struck first in the early going of the first half to gain a 1-0 advantage. They netted their eventual game-winner after scoring off a penalty-shot by the Nighthawks Nilton De Andrade to close out the first half.

Mike Russo-Pinta (Malden, Mass.) recorded one save on three faced shots in the first half while Jarrod Smith made four saves in first half action for Newbury. Giancarlo Orsini (Watertown, Conn.) registered three shots (two on goal) in the first stanza.

Curry outshot the Nighthawks 15-8 in the contest. Reigning NECC Player of the Week Ethan Forrest continued his hot stretch of games when he tallied his fifth goal in the last two games for Newbury.

In the 51st minute the Colonels broke the scoring drought when Christian Mancini struck the ball off a set play to trim the Nighthawks' lead to one. Mancini paced the Curry offense with four shots.  

Smith finished with seven saves while Russo-Pinta recorded three saves.

Curry put the pressure on the Nighthawks in the second half, but were unable to score the equalizer. Smith faced eight shots but held strong and didn't allow the game-tying goal over the final 49 minutes.

The Colonels return to the pitch Saturday when they host Roger Williams at 5 p.m. while Newbury heads to Regis (Mass.) for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
