Men's Soccer Battles Salem State to a 2-1 Double Overtime Loss in Non-Conference Action

SALEM, Mass. – Kevin Gallo (Melrose, Mass.) scored twenty seconds into the second overtime as Salem State earned their first victory of the season with a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win over the Curry Colonels on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. The Vikings improve to 1-0-1 on the year while Curry goes to 2-2.

Gallo's game-winner was set up by Nicholas Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.), who fed a perfect cross pass to Gallo, who rifled in the shot from five yards out.

In an evenly played first half, Salem State jumped on top 1-0 when Vien Pham (Melrose, Mass.) headed in a cross from Caleb Gomes (Nantucket, Mass.) in the 8th minute. Curry answered as Ben Silvia (Dartmouth, Mass.) connected from eight yards out to tie the score at 1-1. Both teams registered six shots on goal.

The second half saw limited scoring chances despite the Vikings holding a 5-1 advantage in shots. Yabesy Musema (Lynn, Mass.) nearly gave Salem State the lead in the 66th minute as he broke free and converged on goalie Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) uncontested, but Johnson made the point blank save to keep the game tied. Curry nearly stole the lead when Salem State goalie Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) drifted too far from the box and an errant pass almost bounced into the net. However, Ryan Smith (Shelton, Conn.) alertly knocked away the potential score at the goal line.

Enos made four saves in the victory while Johnson registered seven saves. The Vikings held a 12-10 advantage in shots.

Salem State travels to Emerson for a 3:30 pm match on Saturday.  Curry hosts Wentworth also on Saturday at 11:00 AM. (Game Recap Courtesy of Salem State Sports Information)
