Men's Soccer Plays Commonwealth Coast Conference Foe Eastern Nazarene to a 2-2 Double Overtime Tie

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team tied Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Eastern Nazarene College, 2-2 in double overtime on Wednesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the tie the Colonels move to 10-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the CCC. The Lions are now 8-7-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the CCC.

The first half was an evenly played match with Eastern Nazarene holding a slight advantage in shots at 6-4. The Lions got on the board first to take 1-0 lead nine minutes into the half. Andrew Nelson (Burtonsville, Md.) crossed the ball from the corner of the field which Luis Lopez (Alexandria, Va.) received for a one-time shot past the glove of the Colonel's goalkeeper Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.).  Eastern Nazarene's goalkeeper David Eddings (Endicott, N.Y.) held Curry scoreless over the 45 minutes making two stops.

Curry controlled most of the second stanza and outshot Eastern Nazarene 11-4.  They struggled however to get the ball on net landing just two.  It wasn't until the 77:45 minute mark that the Colonels were able to tie the game.  Alex Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) was credited with an assist after sending Tim Stein (Smithfield, R.I.) a through ball.  Stein struck the ball hard over the head of Eddings.  The Lions were quick to regain the lead as the netted their second on the night just over four minutes later.  Nelson earned his third point on the night when he tallied an unassisted goal.  With only 2:42 showing on the clock Curry evened the score for the second time sending the teams into overtime.  Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) collected a loose ball inside the 18-yard box and sent it past Eddings.

The squads combined for just five shots over the 20 minute sudden death overtime with neither team earning the game-winning tally.  Curry had four landing one on net while Eastern Nazarene produced just one that was on net. 

The Colonels finished with 21 shots and seven corner kicks. The Lions had nine shots and zero corners.

Johnson made four saves in net for Curry.  Eddings made six stops for Eastern Nazarene.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, October 24 when they travel to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Wentworth in a 3:00 p.m. game start. Eastern Nazarene also returns to action on Saturday when they travel to the University of New England for a conference contest at 1:00 p.m.
