Gilman Nets Game-Winner as Men's Soccer Defeats the University of New England, 1-0 in Double Overtime

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent University of New England, 1-0, in double overtime on Tuesday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field. The Colonels improved to 10-8-1 overall and 4-5 in the conference. The Nor'easters fell to 9-6-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the CCC.

Senior Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) ripped a shot at the 15-yard line that soared into the right hand corner of the net past the Nor'easters senior goalkeeper Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) with just one second showing on the board in double overtime.  McParland made a diving save but couldn't make the stop leading the Colonels to a 1-0 victory.

After 90 minutes of regulation, Curry led in shots, 15-8.  Just seven of the 15 strikes however landed on net.  Junior Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn.) and freshman Dave Stapleton (Easton, Mass.) had back to back chances late in the second half but McParland's strong play between the pipes kept the Colonels scoreless.  Curry's sophomore goaltender Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) was solid in net for his team making four saves.

Just 41 second into the first overtime, Montero one-timed the ball right in front of McParland.  The shot looked to be heading into the net but McParland dove and got a glove on it.  Junior Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) collected the rebound and struck hard but a Nor'easter defender was there to make the block and keep the game tied at zero.  The Colonels led 6-1 in shots during the first overtime but struggled to put the game away.  During the final overtime, the squads were tied in shots at two apiece.  UNE's were 31 seconds apart from each other just over two minutes into play.  However both junior Tyler Garnick (Derry, N.H.) and senior Matthew Christie (Hudson, N.H.) came up wide of the net. McParland earned one of Curry's shots but fell short on their final one resulting in the loss.

Curry had a game total of 23 shots, 10 fouls and four corner kicks.  UNE had a game total of 11 shots, 13 fouls and four corner kicks.

Johnson made five stops in net for the Colonels in the win.  McParland recorded 12 saves for the Nor'easters in the loss.

Both teams will wait to hear their CCC Quarterfinal seeding.  The games will take place on Saturday, November 1.  Time and place TBA.
