Men's Soccer Defeats Lyndon State, 4-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated Lyndon State, 4-1, on Monday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field. With the win the Colonels improve to 6-4-1 overall while the Hornets fell to 4-7 on the season.

The Colonels came out strong to start the opening frame.  Curry netted the first two goals just 1:41 apart.  With less than 10 minutes into play, freshman Ben Silvia (Dartmouth, Mass.) tallied his first collegiate goal.  Junior Rolando Montero (Dartmouth, Mass.) sent a though pass to Silvia who one-timed it into the top right corner of the net.  Less than two minutes later, the Colonels extended their lead after junior Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) ripped a shot from 15-yards out past Lyndon's freshman goaltender Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, N.Y.).  Montero sent a cross from the corner of the field to earn his second helper.  Despite outshooting the Hawks, 7-0, over a 20 minute span, Lyndon would finally gain control of the ball and into Curry's offensive zone.  At the 23:21 minute mark, the Hawks got themselves on the board.  Freshman Devin Cowan (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) saw an open classmate, Nick Fahey (Middleboro, Mass.) inside the box who stuck it by sophomore goalkeeper Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.).  The Colonel's headed into the break with a 3-1 advantage after junior Tim Stein (Smithfield, R.I.) scored one off a pass from junior Ryan Madden (Milton, Mass.).

Curry capped off the scoring in the final half midway through.  Silvia earned his second on the night when classmate Larry Janvier (Milton, Mass.) saw Silvia open in front of the net.  Silvia got one touch on the ball that landed over LaClair to help his team to their sixth victory.

With the win, Head Coach Pete Mendel became the Colonels winningest coaches in the program's history.  He surpassed Jim Kaufman who had 71 wins in 10 years.  Mendel has 72 victories over eight seasons.

The Colonels finished with 32 shots and five corner kicks.  The Hornets finished with five shots and two corner kicks.

Johnson made two saves in net in 45 minutes of play for the win before giving way to junior netminder Andrew Knighton (Lisbon, N.H.) who saw his first time in goal this season.  Knighton made one stop in 45 minutes.  LaClair made 12 saves in net for the loss.

Curry returns to action on Wednesday, October 8 when they travel to Becker for a 4:00 p.m. game start.  Lyndon hosts Norwich University also on Wednesday in a 4:00 p.m. start.
