Men's Soccer Captures the CIAO Classic Championship with a 1-0 Win Over Union College

NORTH ADAMS, MA – The Curry College Colonels captured the CAIO Classic Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon.  The Colonels scored a first-half goal to edge the Union College Dutchmen, 1-0, at the CAIO (Community Italian American Organization) Classic hosted by the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA).

With the win, Curry remains undefeated on the season with a 4-0 record.  Union falls to 2-1 overall in the loss.

Nick Gilman scored his first goal of the season at the 14:07 mark for the Colonels, accepting a through pass from Matt Cotnoir and tucking a shot from 12 yards out into the lower right corner pass Union goalkeeper Ryan Carter.  The Dutchmen had their chances to counter as they finished with a 20-8 advantage in total shots, strengthened by 11 corner kicks but was unable to convert.  Curry's goalkeeper Dan Johnson was solid in net making 10 stops.  Union outshot Curry 11-5 in the final frame but the Colonels strong defensive play along with Johnson's six saves held the Dutchmen scoreless.

Union played the last 25 minutes with 10 players after a red card was issued to the Dutchmen in the 65th minute.  Offensively, Jeff Guinn's squad was led by Carl Faber (six shots) and Tyler DeWaltoff (five shots).

Gilman's lone goal of the match proved to be the game-winner.  Johnson was named Defensive Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
