Men's Soccer Blanks Becker, 3-0

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated the visiting Hawks of Becker College, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 7-7-3 overall.  The Hawks end their season at 0-17-1.

The Colonels came out strong to start the opening stanza.  Curry got on the board just 10:47 into the half.  Sophomore defender Ryan Madden (Milton, Mass.) dribbled the ball past a Hawk defender and sent a through pass to classmate forward Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) who one-timed it past Becker's senior netminder Tim MacDonald (Holden, Mass.).  The Colonels kept the pressure on the Hawks and extended their lead by two at the 26:15 minute mark.  Becker caused a foul just outside the 18-yard box and junior midfielder Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) was awarded the kick.  Gilman shot the ball which landed in the top right corner of the net over the head of MacDonald.  Curry outshot Becker 16-2 in the frame but MacDonald made nine saves to hold the Colonels to just two tallies.  Senior goaltender Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) only needed to make on stop to keep the Hawks scoreless.

Curry controlled the final 45 minutes of play again outshooting Becker by a large margin of 12-5.  The Hawks were able to land four of their five shots on net but Barber was there to make the saves.  The Colonels secured the victory when senior midfielder Darren Smith (Newcastle, Del.) netted his first and the team's third on the day with 14:15 remaining in regulation.  Smith maneuvered his way around the Hawk's defense and was one-on-one with MacDonald.  Smith easily tapped the ball low into the corner of the net for the score.

The Colonels finished with 28 shots, 20 on net, 10 fouls and 15 corner kicks.  The Hawks finished with seven shots, five on net, five fouls and one corner kick.

Curry played three goalies in the 90:00 minutes.  Barber earned the win making five saves in 51:00 minutes. Freshman Kyle Yeager (Lancaster, Pa.) collected two saves in 24:45 minutes in net and sophomore Andrew Knighton (Lisbon, N.H.) finished the game in goal playing in 14:15 minutes.  MacDonald collected an impressive 15 stops in net for the loss in 75:45 minutes before being replaced by freshman Kyle Miller (Lexington, Ky.) who made two saves in 14:15 minutes in net.

The Colonels are next in action when they host conference opponent Nichols on Tuesday, October 29 for a 4:00 p.m. match.
