Men's Soccer Absorbs 2-0 Loss at Gordon College

WENHAM, Mass. – For 70 minutes, the Gordon and Curry Men's Soccer teams played each other evenly. However, the Scots dominated play during the first 20 minutes in regulation—scoring two goals during that time—and defeated the visiting Colonels 2-0 on Senior Night at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

The Scots shocked the Colonels only 75 seconds into the match when Andy Guthrie found himself wide open down the right sideline, with no one to beat. The junior midfielder was able to stay ahead of the defense and sent a screaming cross in front inside the six-yard box.

Curry's defense was slow to react to the pass and freshman Daniel Perez (Bedford, Mass.) was able to finish the cross with relative ease. The Colonel's goalkeeper Nick Barber tried to get back to the far post to cover an unmarked Perez, but the forward blasted it home for the first score of the game.

Gordon continued to push the tempo in their offensive half, but Barber made save after save to keep his team in the game.

A controversial foul in the 21st minute, gave the Scots another prime scoring opportunity on a free kick from 20 yards out. Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) chipped the free ball over the defensive wall and into the top-right corner of the net for the 2-0 lead.

Curry's defense would tighten up for the remaining of the game, but Barber was the star of the unit. Repeatedly he made the improbable save to keep Gordon's lead at only two goals.

The Colonels had offensive chances of their own, putting six shots on net, but freshman Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) turned them away every time. He finished with six saves on the night. Barber came up with eight of his own, none of which were easy.

The two teams played a physical second half and each had several scoring chances, but neither team could break through for a score.

Gordon remains atop the CCC standings at 4-1, 12-1 overall, while Curry falls to 2-2-1 in conference play. The Scots return to the road on Tuesday for a nightcap with local rival Salem State. The Colonels host CCC conference opponent Western New England on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. game start.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Gordon Sports Information)
