Barber Posts Shutout as Men's Soccer Captures a 2-0 Victory Over Newbury College

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated the visiting Nighthawks of Newbury College, 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 5-3-2 overall.  The Nighthawks fell to 3-7.

The Colonels came out strong to start the opening stanza.  Curry got on the board just 9:44 into the half.  Sophomore forward Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) dribbled the ball past a Nighthawk defender and one-timed it past Newbury's freshman netminder Cody Nash-Gibney (South Burlington, Vt.).  The Colonels extended their lead by two just under three minutes later.  Cotnoir saw junior midfielder Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) open in front of the net and sent a sailing cross ball from the corner of the field.  Gilman received the pass shot it over the head of Nash-Gibney.  Gilman's tally would be the last of night to seal the victory.  The Nighthawks had some nice scoring chances of their own but solid play between the pipes from senior Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) held Newbury scoreless.

Curry outshot Newbury 19-7 over the final 45 minutes of play.  All but two of the Nighthawks shots were on net, but they couldn't find the back of the net.  The Colonels landed eight of their 19 shots on net with two goals taken back due to offside calls.  Time ticked down and Curry was able to hold on to the two goal lead for the win.

The Colonels finished with 30 shots, 16 on net, 12 fouls and nine corner kicks.  The Nighthawks finished with 12 shots, nine on net, six fouls and one corner kick.

Barber made nine saves in net for the win. Nash-Gibney collected an impressive 14 stops in net for the loss.

The Colonels are next in action when they travel to conference opponent Wentworth on Saturday, October 5 for a 12:00 p.m. match. Newbury will host Regis College on the same day in a 3:30 p.m.
