Men's Soccer Battles Conference Rival University of New England to a 1-1 Double Overtime Tie

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England and Curry College each scored once during the opening period and battled through 110 minutes to a 1-1 tie in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer action Saturday afternoon (Sep. 28) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The Colonels (4-3-2, 2-0-1 CCC) struck first in the 20th minute, when sophomore Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) collected a bouncing throw-in from senior Ethan Wajer (Newcastle, Maine) on the right side and tucked a low shot near post from 10 yards off the line.

Big Blue (4-3-2, 0-2-1 CCC) answered in the 36th minute, as first-year Dylan Delloiacono (Merrick, N.Y.) stepped into the middle and lofted a shot from about 25 yards out into the upper right corner of the net.

Both goalkeepers were tested throughout as they kept things close. Junior Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) registered 11 saves for UNE, including a diving stop on a point-blank try by Cotnoir in the final moments of regulation. McParland also stuffed Cotnoir right out of the gate in the 3rd minute, as the Curry forward attempted to knock one in near the left post.

For Curry, senior Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) posted six saves in the contest. With the game still scoreless early on, UNE junior Anthony Frangione (Barnstead, N.H.) put a shot on-target from distance that Barber managed to push high. During 2nd-half play, Barber was able to stretch out and deny Nor'easters sophomore Tyler Garnick (Derry, N.H.) to maintain the tied score.

Big Blue returns to action on Wednesday (6 p.m.) for a non-league date with Clark University. The Colonels are back at home the same day against Newbury College.
