Men's Soccer Battles Fitchburg State to a 0-0 Double Overtime Tie

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team battled Fitchburg State to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Wednesday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the tie the Colonels record stands at 3-2-1 overall.  The Falcons overall record is 3-3-1.

The first half ended scoreless with each team playing an even 45 minutes. Curry held a slight advantage in shots with 10 while Fitchburg had seven.  Both goalkeepers played solid between the pipes coming up with impressive saves.  The Colonels senior netminder Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) made four saves while the Falcon's junior netminder Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) made five. Each squad had two corner kicks but couldn't capitalize on them for a score.

Despite Curry outshooting Fitchburg in the second frame just 9-8, the Falcons were able to land four on net and the Colonels just two.  Curry held the lead in corner kicks with six to Fitchburg's two but they fell short in tallying a score.  The Colonels last corner in regulation came with under 20 seconds left to play.  Junior midfielder Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) sent the ball into the middle of the 18-yard box.  Sophomore Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) was able to get a touch on the ball, but placed it right into the hands of Hanratty.  Hanratty's save sent the teams into overtime with 0-0 showing on the board.

Curry controlled the first 10 minutes of sudden-death OT.  The Colonels had the ball in their offensive end for most of the time.  Curry had three shots with two landing on goal.  Fitchburg was unable to get a shot off.  The second overtime saw an evenly matched period.  The teams had just one shot apiece which wasn't enough.  The Colonels and Falcons fought for 110 minutes but neither could walk away with the win.  The horn sounded and the match ended in a 0-0 tie.

Curry finished with 23 shots, 10 on net, 15 fouls, and eight corner kicks. Fitchburg finished with 16 shots, eight on net, 25 fouls, and four corners.

Barber had eight saves in net for the Colonels.  For the Falcons, Hanratty made 10 saves in goal.
