Men's Soccer Edged by Ninth-Ranked Amherst College, 4-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team lost to the visiting Jefs of Amherst College, 4-1, on Wednesday evening.  The Colonels evened their record out at 2-2.  With the win the Jeffs remain undefeated at 3-0.

Four different Jeffs found the back of the net as the ninth-ranked Amherst men's soccer team scored a decisive 4-1 non-conference victory over Curry College.

Controlling the action early, Amherst outshot Curry 6-0 over the first 20 minutes, forcing senior goalkeeper Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) to make three saves. Continuing to push forward, the Jeffs won their sixth corner of the match in the 32nd minute. Serving it into the box, senior Max Fikke (New York, N.Y.) linked up with freshman Andrew Orozco (Coronado, Calif.), who headed it home for his first collegiate goal.

Extending its margin just over 10 minutes later, the visitors took advantage of another set piece. With freshman Cameron Bean (Atlanta, Ga.) playing the ball in, senior Ben Norton (Bethesda, Md.) came out of a scrum in front before sneaking a shot over the line to double Amherst's lead.

The second half proved to be more of the same for the Jeffs as they continued to take advantage of Curry miscues. Floating a ball into the box after a Colonel foul, junior Mikey Hoeksema (Bethany, Conn.) found the head of junior Gabriel Wirz (New York, N.Y.), who flicked it into goal at 56:01.

Still trailing 3-0 in the latter stages of the half, Curry broke through the Amherst defense, netting its lone tally on a successful penalty kick by junior Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) in the 87th minute. The Jeffs weren't finished however as just 1:14 later, sophomore Will Poss (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) capped off the scoring by heading in a sophomore Tommy Haskel (Basking Ridge, N.J.) cross from the flank.

The Colonels finished with 11 shots and three corner kicks.  Amherst finished with 30 shots and nine corner kicks.

Barber finished with 14 stops in the loss.  For Amherst, sophomore Thomas Bull (Montgomery, N.J.) made five saves for the Jeffs in net for the win.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, September 14 when they host CCC opponent Salve Regina at 5:00 p.m.  Amherst also returns to action on Saturday, September 14 when they host conference opponent Bowdoin College for a 2:30 p.m. game start.
