Men's Soccer Edges Visiting Emmanuel College, 2-1

MILTON, Mass. –The Curry College men's soccer team defeated visiting Emmanuel College, 2-1, on Wednesday evening.  With the win the Colonels improve to 9-5 overall. The Saints fell to 3-9-2 overall.

Despite the Saints outshouting the Colonels, 10-6 in the opening frame, Curry was able to take a two goal lead which they held onto heading into the break.  Curry’s first goal was scored when senior Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, Mass.) sent sophomore Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) a through pass.  Gilman received the ball and one-timed it past Emmanuels’ freshman goalkeeper James Withers (East Taunton, Mass.).  The Saints had chances to tie the score, but solid play between the pipes by the Colonels’ senior netminder Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) kept Emmanuel scoreless.  Curry’s second tally was off a corner kick by Gilman with just over two minutes left to play.  Freshman Matt Vient (West Springfield, Mass.) was in front of the goal and was able to head the ball into the back of the net.

Curry outplayed Emmanuel in the final frame.  The Colonels had 15 shots, while the Saints had just two.  Withers was able to make six saves in the second and hold Curry to their two first half goals.  Barber’s only shot on net resulted in the Saints one tally of the evening.   Emmanuel got on the board at the 31:06 minute mark.  Sophomore Samuel Babchuck (Bridgewater, Mass.) was called for a hand ball inside the 18-yard box, and gave the Saints a penalty-kick.  Senior Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) was awarded the PK and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net. The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game with Curry trying to earn an insurance goal and Emmanuel trying to tie the score at two.  Time ran out however and the Colonels came away with the 2-1 victory.

Curry finished with 21 shots, 11 on net, five corners, 10 fouls and six offsides.  Emmanuel had 12 shots, seven on goal, three corners, 13 fouls and six offside calls.

Barber made six saves in net for the Colonels in the win.  Withers made nine saves for the Saints in the loss.

The Colonels will travel to take on CCC opponent Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, October 13 for a 3:00 p.m. game start.  The Saints will host conference opponent Anna Maria College also on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
