MILTON, Mass. –Curry College men's soccer team defeated visiting Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent the University of New England, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon.  With the win the Colonels improve to 8-4 overall, and even their record out at 2-2 in the CCC. The Nor’easters fell to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the CCC.

The Colonels came out strong at the first whistle and kept their competitive play throughout the entire half.  Curry outshot the Nor’easters 17-7.  They were the first to get on the board at the 29:01 minute mark when senior Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) sent a ball from the corner of the field and classmate Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, Mass.) was in front of the net for the diving header.  The Colonels continued to control the game but the Nor’easters were able to tie the score at one apiece just over 16 minutes later.  The University of New England was awarded a corner kick which was taken by sophomore Anthony Frangione (Barnstead, N.H.).  Frangiones’ ball was placed in the middle of the 18-yard box and junior Matthew Christie (Hudson, N.H.) was there for the one-timer.  Solid play between the pipes from sophomore Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ont.) kept the teams tied heading into the break.

Curry had 17 shots, seven on net, five corners and three fouls.  The University of New England had seven shots, two on net, two corners and two fouls.

The Colonels picked up where they left off in the opening frame to start the final 45 minutes of play.  Curry had another display of shooting with 17, while the University of New England managed just four.  Senior Nick Lawless (Hull, Mass.) finally put the Colonels ahead with the game-winning goal at 24:34 showing on the board.  The Nor’easters committed a foul outside the box and sophomore Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) took the free kick.  The ball sailed straight to net and Lawless was there for the tally.   McParland dove and got a hand on it, but it wasn’t enough to make the save.  The University of New England had a chance to tie the game with just five minutes to play when Christie had a breakaway and went one-on-one with senior netminder Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.).  Barber came out of the net and made a sliding kick save to deny Christie and his team the chance for the tie and a possible overtime.  Curry maintained their one goal lead to finish out regulation for their second conference win of the season.

Curry finished with 34 shots, 18 on net, 10 corners and six fouls.  The University of New England ended with 11 shots, five on goal, four corners and 13 fouls.
