Men's Soccer Earns First CCC Win of the Season, Defeating Visiting Wentworth, 1-0

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated Wentworth 1-0 win, in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon in Milton.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 7-2 on the season and 1-1 in the CCC.  Curry also earned their sixth straight home game with the victory.  The Leopards now hold an overall record of 1-5-1 and 0-2 in the conference.

In the opening frame, both teams battled to a 0-0 score heading into the break.  Shots were even for both teams with 12 but the goalkeepers solid play between the pipes held the half scoreless.  Senior John Longo (Needham, Mass.) made eight stops for the Leopards in net while senior netminder Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) made seven saves for the Colonels.

The Colonels finished the half with 12 shots, eight on net, five fouls and five corner kicks.  The Leopards finished with 12 shots, seven on net, six fouls and one corner,

The lone goal and game-winner came just 6:19 into the second half.  Senior Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) was awarded a corner kick.  Sophomore Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) was in front of the net and took a shot but the ball rebounded off a Wentworth defender.  Junior Darren Smith (Newcastle, Del.) collected the rebound and shot it past Longo for the tally.  The Leopards had a few opportunities to tie the match but tough defensive play by the Colonels held the Leopards scoreless.  Curry was able to keep the 1-0 lead for the remaining 38:41 for their first conference win of the season.

The Colonels outshot the Leopards 31-24 for the win.  Curry finished with a season-high 13 corners and had 13 fouls.  The Leopards had 24 shots, four corners, and 11 fouls. 

Barber earned the win in net and the shutout making 12 saves in net.  Longo made 17 saves in goal for Wentworth in the loss.

The Colonels will host Amherst College on Tuesday, September 25 for an 8:00 p.m. kick off.  Wentworth hosts Brandeis University also on Tuesday, September 25, at 4:00 p.m.
