Men's Soccer Knocks Off Visiting Newbury, 3-1

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated Newbury College, 3-1, in men's soccer action on Monday evening in Milton.  With the win, the Colonel's improve to 5-2 overall. The Nighthawks fell to 3-3-1 on the season.

The Colonels got on the board first at the 25:45 minute mark in the opening frame.  Senior Zach Kumin (Needham, Mass.) took a shot outside of the 30-yard line and the ball sailed over the head of Newbury’s freshman goalkeeper, Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.), and into the back of the net.  Curry controlled most of the play in the first half, outshooting the Nighthawks 16-9.

 Curry made five saves, had 16 shots, eight on net, eight fouls, and two corners. The Nighthawks had nine shots, five on net, seven saves, four fouls, and one corner kick.  Newbury had two yellow cards handed out and Curry had one. 

Just 45 seconds into the second half, freshman Alex Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal, unassisted, to put his team up by two.  At the 26:13 mark, senior Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.), was awarded a corner kick and junior Ethan Wajer (Newcastle, Maine) was in front of the net and one-timed it for the Colonels final tally of the evening.  Newbury was able to put up a score just under 20 minutes remaining to play.  Freshman Maica Gomes (Boston, Mass.) tapped the ball in past senior netminder Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) off an assist by sophomore Milton Ricuarte (Central Falls, R.I.).  The teams battled each other for the remainder of the contest with both teams earning multiple fouls.  The squads were unable to attain another goal and after regulation the final score was 3-1 in favor of Curry.

The Colonels finished with a game total of 30 shots, 13 on net, eight saves, four offsides, eight corner kicks, 20 fouls and four yellow cards.  The Nighthawks finished with 14 total shots, nine on net, 10 saves, three offsides, two corner kicks, nine fouls and three yellow cards. 

For Curry, Barber earned the win in net making eight saves.  Tran earned the loss for Newbury making 10 stops. 

The Colonels will host Coast Guard on Wednesday, September 19, for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest. Newbury will host Becker on Wednesday, September 26, for a 4:00 p.m. game start.
