Lawless Scores Game-Winner in Overtime to Lift Men's Soccer Past Johnson & Wales, 3-2

MILTON, Mass.- Senior Nicholas Lawless (Hull, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime as Curry College defeated Johnson & Wales University, 3-2, in men's soccer action on Wednesday night in Milton.  With the win, the Colonel's improve to 4-1 overall. The Wildcat’s fell to 2-1-1 on the season.

The Colonels got on the board just 40 seconds into the opening frame. Sophomore Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) received a pass from Lawless and one-timed the ball into the top right corner of the net.  At the 9:54 minute mark, sophomore Kyle Metz (St. James, N.Y.) tied the game when he scored his first of two goals on the night, unassisted.  Metz gave his team the lead before the half ended when he beat a Colonel defender and tapped the ball past senior goaltender Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.). Despite trailing 2-1 after the first 45 minutes of play, Curry outshot the Wildcats 17-10.  Barber and Johnson & Wales’ freshman netminder, Jon Robbins (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) each made five saves.

Robbins was replaced by freshman Austin Scoggin (Mattituck, N.Y.) at the start of second half.  Scoggin was solid between the pipes as Curry controlled most of the play and had 19 shots to the Wildcats three.  Scoggin came up with big saves, but with just 15:27 minutes remaining in regulation, the Colonels tied the game at two apiece.  Johnson & Wales committed a foul in the 18-yard box which resulted in a penalty kick.  Freshman Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn.) was awarded the shot and earned his team’s tying tally.  Curry continued to pressure the Wildcat’s defense but was unable to land the game-winner and the teams were sent into overtime.

Shots after regulation were 36-13 in favor of the Colonels.  Johnson & Wales made 14 saves, while Curry had five.

The Colonels only outshot the Wildcats 4-2 in overtime with each goalkeeper making one save.  With just 2:31 showing on the clock, senior Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) crossed the ball from the corner of the field and Lawless received the ball and shot for his team’s fourth win of the season.

Robbins made five saves in 45:00 minutes of play in net for Johnson & Wales.  Scoggin took the loss in goal for his team, making 10 stops in 52:29 minutes.  Barber played the entire 97:29 and earned the win in goal for Curry with eight total saves.
