Buccaneers Control Tempo versus Men’s Lacrosse

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference battle to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon by a score of 15-7. After three games, the Colonels remain in search of their first win of the year, while the Buccaneers find theirs and improve to 1-1.

Curry drew first blood early, as Dane Hanson (East Providence, R.I.) scored off a helper from Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.). Three minutes later, the two attacks connected again to make it 2-0. However, with eight minutes remaining in the quarter, Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass.) tallied Mass. Maritime's second score of the day to knot the score. The Bucs would strike again with just over a minute left on the clock, which would send them into the second stanza with a 3-2 advantage.

Mass. Maritime began to break away as halftime approached. Mitchell Maida (Burlington, Mass.) scored three of the second quarter's first four goals, all unassisted. The Bucs put two more goals onto the board to make it 8-3, but the Colonels cut the deficit to four, as Joseph Stronach (Marshfield, Mass.) notched a man-up goal off an assist from Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.). The 8-4 score held through halftime.

Out of the intermission, Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) kept the momentum with the hosts, scoring first to make it 8-5, but three unanswered goals by the Buccaneers brought the lead to six. For the second straight quarter, the Colonels found the back of the net late, this time out of the crosse of Matthew Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.), but still trailed heading into the fourth by a five-goal margin.

As the final frame got under way, Mass. Maritime brought the lead back to six as Maida tallied his sixth score of the day. Each of the next two goals belonged to Jones, giving him a hat trick on the day and giving the visitors a 14-6 edge. Over the game's final five minutes, each team cashed in once more, leading to a final score of 15-7, in favor of the Buccaneers.

Maida led the way with his double hat-trick, ending the game with seven points and four ground balls. Hanson turned in the only multi-goal performance on Curry's side, while Stebbins topped the team with eight shots. In goal, Matthew Pierson (Longmeadow, Mass., 1-1) earns the win after an eight save performance, while Mike Collins (Franklin, Mass.) falls to 0-2, despite making 22 stops.

The Buccaneers will return home to take on Norwich on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:00 p.m. The Colonels get back to action on Tuesday, March 10, as they travel to face M.I.T. at 4:00 p.m.
