MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-7 decision to Trinity College on Wednesday evening. After the defeat, the Colonels sit at 0-2 on the year, while the Bantams (1-1) grab their first win of the season.
The Bantams opened with a strong offensive effort, scoring twice over the game's opening 75 seconds. The score stood until the halfway point of the first frame, when Reid McDonald (Aldie, Va.) notched a goal off an assist from Thomas Mara (Irvington, N.Y.). The Trinity tally would be the last of the quarter for either side, as the visitors took a 3-0 edge into the first break.
As the second quarter kicked off, the Colonels cut into the lead, as Dane Hanson (East Providence, R.I.) scored his first goal of the season off a helper from Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.). The Curry momentum would be short-lived, though, as Trinity brought the deficit back to three just 55 seconds later, thanks to a Connor McCulloch (Alexandria, Va.) marker. Hanson's score would prove to be the hosts' only tally of the first half, but the Bantams tacked on three more, bringing the score to 7-1 at the intermission.
Trinity did not let off the gas after the break, scoring twice more over the first two minutes of the third stanza. As the clock continued to wind down, the score moved to 11-1, before scores by Hanson and Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) cut the Bantam lead to eight at 11-3. The third quarter ended with the same score, but Curry continued to chip away into the fourth, as Fallon notched his fifth goal of the season with 13:30 to play. Stebbins picked up an assist on the score. Jack Cahill (Medfield, Mass.) struck again to bring Trinity's lead back to eight, but unassisted goals by Stebbins and Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) over the following five minutes of play brought the score to 12-6. With 3:45 left on the clock, Hanson notched his third goal of the day to make it 12-7, but following a faceoff win, the Bantams were content in running out the remainder of the clock and departed with the five-goal victory.
Curry's Hanson and Trinity's Cahill and McCulloch led all players with three goals each. Cahill (3 goals, 1 assist) and Mara (1 goal, 3 assists) turned in the only four-point performances of the night. Liam Fitzgerald (Skillman, N.J.) played a significant role in kick-starting, the Bantam offense, leading the team in ground balls (7) and winning 14-of-20 faceoffs. Patrick Grimes (Morristown, N.J., 1-1) picks up his first win of the year between the pipes, making 10 saves. Mike Collins (Franklin, Mass., 0-1) made 18 saves for the Colonels, playing all 60 minutes.
The Colonels will get back to action on Saturday, March 7 with a 12:00 p.m. home match-up against the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Trinity will also come back to the field on Saturday, as they stay on the road to take on Bates in a 1:00 p.m. NESCAC contest.
