BRISTOL, R.I – Roger Williams University claimed a 10-8 win in men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon with a 10-8 victory over Curry College at Bayside Field in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.
The Hawks improved to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the CCC while the Colonels slip to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Sophomore Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) scored a game-high five goals and added two assists for seven points to lead Roger Williams. Junior Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) pitched in three points on one goal and two assists. Senior Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) and freshman Pat Barboza (Stamford, Conn.) registered two helpers apiece to round out the Hawks with multiple points.
Senior MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) and junior Cameron Nigro (Scarborough, Maine) each tallied three goals to pace Curry. Junior Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and two assists while classmate Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.) recorded a goal and an assist.
Roger Williams opened the game with the first goal of the contest just 51 seconds in on an unassisted tally from sophomore Brenden Whitten (Kennebunk, Maine). The Colonels responded at the 9:04 mark of the opening frame, thanks to a goal from Nigro off a pass from Fallon. The Hawks would find the back of the net twice more before the end of the first quarter. Mullane tallied a marker with the assist going to Barboza while sophomore Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) netted an unassisted goal with just over a minute and a half remaining to give Roger Williams a 3-1 lead after one.
The Hawks extended its lead at the start of the second by way of a 3-0 run on goals by Marzec, Mullane, and sophomore Gabe Reale (Fairfield, Conn.) to stretch the advantage to 6-1. Curry was able to get one of those goals back on an unassisted tally by Nigro. Despite the Nigro goal, Roger Williams still led 6-2 at the half.
The Colonels came of the intermission and began to chip away at the lead. Curry cut the deficit in half, 6-3, on an unassisted goal by DeLeary. The Hawks responded with a marker by Mullane as the assist was awarded to Bova to send the lead back to four. The Colonels scored two straight 29 seconds apart from one another on goals by senior Kyle Lussier (Topsham, Maine) and junior Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.). Roger Williams had the final tally of the third as sophomore Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.) registered a goal with just 16 seconds left to give the Hawks an 8-5 advantage with one quarter remaining.
Roger Williams started the final stanza with back-to-back goals just under a minute apart by Mullane. Both assists were awarded to Marzec. Curry then outscored the Hawks 3-0 over the remainder of the frame. Urbano scored two, including a man-up marker with 2:20 left. Fallon pitched in the middle goal of the run with the assist going to DeLeary as the Colonels fell by a final score of 10-8.
Curry finished the contest with a 37-36 edge in shots, committed four less turnovers than the home squad and held the advantage at the face off dot.
Roger Williams' senior goalie Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) finished with 14 saves against 22 shots and also added four ground balls. Junior Brian Brockwell (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up six ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Senior goalie Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) was tagged with the loss in the cage, registering four saves against 10 shots in one half of action. Freshman Bobby Cannan (Bernardsville, N.J.) played the entire second half in goal and made five saves.
Curry rounds out a two-game road trip on Tuesday, April 2 at Salve Regina at 4:00 p.m. Roger Williams remains home to host Gordon on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
