MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team outscored the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology 3-0 in the final quarter to turn a 5-4 third-quarter deficit into a 7-5 victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Wednesday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field. With the victory, the Colonels improve to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the CCC. The loss sends the Leopards to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The opening quarter featured only one goal, which was in favor of the Wentworth. Senior Matt Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) put the Leopards in front 1-0 with a tally with 7:07 left in the frame. The marker was assisted by junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).
The Curry offense came alive at the start of the second with a 3-0 run on goals by sophomore Matthew Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.), junior Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.), and sophomore Matthew Henderson (Scarborough, Maine). Wentworth answered back with two straight, one apiece from sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and freshman Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) to knot the game at three. The Colonels broke the tie on an unassisted marker from junior Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.) with 52 seconds left in the half, which gave Curry a 4-3 lead at the break.
The Leopards regained the lead in the third quarter, registering two goals and shutting out Curry. Freshman Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) put a shot past Colonels' freshman goalie Bobby Cannan (Bernardsville, N.J.) with 4:52 left in the stanza. Wentworth jumped back in front with a goal from Coakley with 1:34 remaining to make the score 5-4 at the end of three.
Curry fired back in the fourth, outscoring the Leopards 3-0 in the final 15 minutes. Just over a minute and a half in, senior Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) notched the game-tying goal off a helper from junior Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.). The Colonels wasted little time as Ton scored eight seconds later off an assist from Newell. Newell then made history on his last marker with 32 seconds left as he registered the 100th goal of his career and the final tally in a 7-5 final.
Newell led the way with a game-high three points on two goals and two assists. Ton put up two markers on the afternoon while Fallon was the only other Curry student-athletes to record multiple points with a goal and an assist.
Coakley and Doner were the two Leopards to register multiple points. Coakley pitched in two goals while Doner had two assists.
Curry held the advantage in shots (49-34), ground balls (37-27), and in face offs won (8-7).
Cannan picked up the victory in the cage, playing the final 30 minutes of action. He tallied seven saves in the win. Senior Josh Teller (Milford, Mass.) started the contest and made five stops.
Wentworth's sophomore goalie Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.J.) was tagged with the loss, making 21 saves.
Curry hits the road for two straight conference games, the first being on Saturday, March 30 at Roger Williams at 3:00 p.m. Wentworth will return home to host Nichols on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
