MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team lost a tight non-conference battle against the Norwich University Cadets on Saturday afternoon by a score of 11-10. The Colonels start the season 0-1 while the Cadets find the win column at 1-0.

Each team brought the energy in a game originally slated to take place in Vermont, but moved to Milton to avoid inclement weather. Curry got the to the scoreboard early, as Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) notched an unassisted goal to go up 1-0. Norwich wouldn't stay down for long, however, as another unassisted tally, this one from John Jennings, tied the game at 1. Curry would find the back of the net once more in the period to take a 2-1 advantage to the break, as with 3:30 remaining in the first frame, Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.) grabbed his first point of the year with an assist from Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.).

As the second quarter rolled around, DeLeary went back to his helping ways, finding senior Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) to take advantage of a man-up advantage. Just over a minute later, the Colonels extended their lead to 4-1, as MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) sent an unassisted shot past the goalkeeper to hit the score sheet for his first time of the day. The Cadets would keep the deficit manageable by converting a man-up advantage with an unassisted tally from Kyle Maxim (Dracut, Mass.), but the Colonels would once again take control, as Zachary Mozzer (Ellington, Conn.) hooked up with Kyle Lussier (Topsham, Maine) to go up 5-2, despite being a man down. Curry would go on to score two of the final three goals of the period, each of them coming unassisted from Urbano as he collected the first Colonel hat trick of the year. Norwich split these goals with a marker from Parker Campbell (Rockaway, N.J.) with an assist from Aidan Moulten (Danvers, Mass.), but the Colonels took a comfortable 7-3 lead to halftime.

The teams opened the second half by trading shots over an uneventful third stanza, as each team managed just a single tally. Norwich struck first as Moulten found the net off a helper from Clyde Tamburro (Elizabethtown, Pa.), but Urbano struck for the fourth time to reinstate Curry's four goal lead, assisted at the 6:02 mark by Lussier. Despite entering the final frame with an 8-4 edge, the Colonels stumbled out of the gates. An early two-minute major penalty coupled with costly turnovers in the defensive zone led to five unanswered goals from the Cadets, who took their first lead of the day at 9-8. Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, the Curry net minder got picked off, which quickly led to an unassisted Norwich goal from Jack Anzalone (Ridgewood, N.J.), with the man advantage. Following the score, on Curry's ensuing clear attempt, another failed clear led to another unassisted marker, this one from Christian Williams (Lagrangeville, N.Y.), cutting the lead to 8-6, while still remaining up a man. With just three seconds remaining on the major penalty assessed to Clinton Wilson (Freehold, N.J.), Campbell found Parker who hit the net for the second time of the day, cutting the Curry lead to one at 8-7.  Struggling to maintain their cushion, the Colonels once again surrendered a man advantage, as a pair of penalties put the Cadets up nine men to Curry's seven. After killing off the thirty-second minor, Curry saw Anzalone once again convert the man-up chance, tying the game at eight with 8:05 to play.

Back at even strength, the Cadets capped off their scoring run with an unassisted rocket from Jacob Center (Glens Falls, N.Y.). The Colonels didn't take well to playing from behind, however, as Urbano registered his fifth goal of the day to knot it at nine, then two minutes later found Stebbins who put the Colonels back on top, 10-9, with 2:46 left to play. The lead wouldn't hold for long, though, as Campbell found his second goal and third point of the afternoon, with a helper from Jennings, to bring us back to a tie score at 10 all. After the Cadets won a faceoff, each team sent a shot wide before a save by Norwich goalie Brandon Milburn (Bridgewater, N.J.) gave possession back to the visitors. After a Norwich timeout with 34 seconds remaining and the ball on the offensive end, a pass from Moulten from behind the net took a Norwich bounce off the stick of Anzalone, as it dribbled its way into the net with just seven ticks left on the clock. This score would prove to be the decider, as the Colonels were unable to get a quality shot off after a lengthy faceoff, giving the Cadets a hard-fought, comeback victory by a score of 11-10.

Urbano topped the Colonels in the losing effort in goals (5), points (6) and shots (12) while DeLeary posted a pair of assists. Goaltender Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) managed 12 saves. The Cadets were led by a hat trick by Anzalone, whose nine shots, six of which were on goal, were also team highs. Anzalone, Campbell, Jennings, and Moulten all racked up three points in the victory while Milburn collected 17 saves.

Curry returns to action next weekend for another non-conference home match up. The Colonels welcome in the Beacons of UMass Boston for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday, March 2. Later this week, Norwich will continue a short road trip to start the year, as they visit New England College at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27.
