Men's Lacrosse Captures Regular Season Road Finale Over Wentworth, 14-10

BOSTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team captured its regular season road finale, topping the Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 14-10 final on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Sweeney Field. The win moves the Colonels to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the CCC while the Leopards slip to 6-7 and 1-6 in league play.

The teams played an even opening 15 minutes, each tallying three goals. Wentworth got things started with a strike from Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) off an assist from Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). Curry answered with their first goal of the contest on a man-up opportunity. Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) found the back of the net, with the helper going to Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.). The Leopards broke the tie at the 2:28 mark on an unassisted goal for Riley Smith (Plaistow, N.H.). Just five seconds later, Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) registered his first of the game off the assist from Zach White (Milford, Conn.). Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) gave the Colonels a one-goal lead with 1:34 left in the stanza. Wentworth scored the equalizer with 1:05 remaining in the frame on an unassisted marker from Zach Tomaszek (Milford, Conn.).

Curry broke the game open in the second, starting the frame on a 3-0 run thanks to two goals from Cashin and the third to Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) to double up the Leopards, 6-3. Wentworth halted the run with a Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Mass.) marker but Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) and DeLeary answered with goals of their own to push the lead back to four, 8-4. Wentworth got on the board once more before the end of the half on an unassisted goal from Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) as the Colonels entered the half with an 8-5 lead.  

The Leopards began to chip away at the deficit in the third, outscoring Curry 3-2. Cashin continued his big day on the field with another goal, this time off a helper from Fallon. Smith found the nylon exactly two minutes later but Cashin put another in at the 5:50 mark to stretch the lead back to four, 10-6. Eldred and Smith each scored once over the final 3:29 of the quarter to trim the lead to 10-8 with one quarter to go.

The Colonels closed the game in impressive fashion, tallying four goals to Wentworth's two in the final frame. Cashin put up his final goal of the game on an unassisted marker just 33 seconds into the quarter. Eldred kept the contest at a two goal deficit with a goal but a 3-0 run spanning three minutes gave Curry a 14-9 advantage with 3:23 left. The Leopards struck one more time before the end of the game on a goal from Coakley with the assist going to Eldred.

Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) secured the win for the Colonels in the cage, recording 11 saves while facing 21 shots. Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) was given the loss, surrendering eight goals. He also made five stops against 13 shots.

Cashin put up a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists. DeLeary, Stebbins, and Serra recorded multi-goal efforts. White won 21-of-28 faceoffs while picking up a game-high 13 groundballs.

Smith and Eldred led the way for Wentworth with each of them recording hat tricks. Coakley was the only other Leopard to register multiple goals as he put up two. Jake Renzi went 7-for-25 on faceoffs to lead that category. Renzi also picked up a team-high six groundballs in the loss.

Curry will close out the regular season on Tuesday, April 24 when they host Salve Regina at 7:00 p.m. Wentworth also concludes the regular season on Tuesday as they will host the University of New England at 7:00 p.m.
