Men's Lacrosse Clipped By UNE, 12-11

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Curry College men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 decision to the University of New England on Wednesday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) showdown at the Big Blue Turf.

The Nor'easters opened the contest with two straight goals from the stick of Garett Bozek (Nashua, N.H.). The Colonels got on the board with 14 seconds left in the frame, thanks to a tally from Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) off an assist from Cameron Nigro (Scarborough, Maine) to trail 2-1 after one.

The second quarter featured nine goals, three of which came from Curry. Alex Zadworny (Florence, Mass.) started the scoring for UNE with an unassisted marker 53 seconds into the stanza. Cashin netted his second of the contest on a man-up opportunity with the assist going to Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.) to make the score 3-2. Two goals separated by 27 seconds: one from Tom Luttrell (Greenbrae, Calif.) and the other from Adam Race (Erieville, N.Y.) pushed the Nor'easter lead to 5-2 with 6:03 left in the half. Back-to-back markers from MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) and Zach White (Milford, Conn.) pulled the Colonels to within one but the mini-run was answered by three straight from the University of New England over the final 3:42 to give the home team an 8-4 lead heading into the halftime intermission.

Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) got the scoring started for Curry in the third quarter off a helper from Cashin. Zadworny and Mitch Mullin (Cumberland, Maine) found the back of the net to put UNE up 10-5 after three quarters.

The Colonels made a furious comeback in the final quarter, highlighted by a 5-0 run to tie the game at 10. The spurt featured five different scorers in Urbano, Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.), Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.), Nigro and Cashin. Following the big run, the Nor'easters put up two markers within 42 seconds to make the score 12-10 with 1:13 left in regulation. Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) found the back of the net as time expired as Curry fell just short.

Bozek poured in a game-high six goals while Zadworny recorded six points on three goals and three assists. Three others found the nylon for UNE on the afternoon. Defensively, Matt Layton (Medford, N.Y.) paced the home team with eight groundballs.

Cashin and Newell finished with four points apiece to lead the Colonels. Urbano was the lone Curry student-athlete besides Cashin to record multiple goals on the afternoon. White scooped up a game-high 13 groundballs to lead the Colonel defense.

Tyler Nevers (Southbury, Conn.) picked up the win in goal for the Nor'easters. He made 16 saves while facing 27 shots. Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) was credited with the loss, converting 13 saves.

Curry (8-5, 3-3 CCC) will next play at Wentworth on Saturday at 3:00. UNE (8-6, 3-2 CCC) hosts Nichols on Saturday at 1:00.
