Men's Lacrosse Topped By Western New England in CCC Opener, 15-8

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team had its five game win streak snapped by Western New England University on Tuesday night, falling 15-8 at Golden Bear Stadium in a conference showdown.

Jared Ward (Littleton, Mass.) scored a game-high five points on four goals and one assist while Jared Newall (Stratford, Conn.) added a hat trick. Conner Cronin (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) netted two goals to give the Golden Bears their final multi-goal scorer. Western New England outshot the Colonels 45-27 in the contest. Reigning CCC Offensive Player of the Week Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) paced Curry with a hat trick.

The Golden Bears got on the board just 1:10 into the contest when Matthew Greer (South Windsor, Conn.) converted on a pass from Nick Gamba (East Islip, N.Y.) to grab the early one goal advantage. The Colonels scored two straight tallies, both from the stick of Newell, the first being assisted from Chris McGreevy (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and the second from Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) to give the visitors a 2-1 lead with 3:50 remaining in the opening quarter. Western New England answered right back with two goals of their own over the final 1:10. Nicholas Beauchamp (Wilbraham, Mass.) finished off a helper from Nick Gamba while Newall found the back of the net with just 24 seconds to go to give the Golden Bears the slim lead after one, 3-2.

Western New England broke the game open in the second quarter outscoring Curry, 5-0. Ward registered the first two markers of the frame while Newall got in the scoring column once again off an assist from Tim Breau (Lima, N.Y.). Oskar Djusberg (Abington, Mass.) and Brendan Lyons (Syosett, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the frame to extend the Golden Bear lead to 8-2 at the break.

Western New England continued their run into the third quarter, tallying the first goal of the stanza. Justin Holl (Mount Laurel, N.J.) converted a pass from Hunter Cocks (Walden, N.Y.) to increase the advantage to 9-2. The Colonels snapped the long run with two goals, one apiece from Newell and Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) to trim the deficit to five, 9-4. The two goal spurt was answered quickly with two goals over a nine second period to stretch the lead to seven with 3:34 left in the quarter. The squads would then trade tallies over the final 3:33 of the frame as Golden Bears carried a seven goal lead into the final quarter, 12-5.

The teams were even in the scoring column as they each scored three times in the final frame. Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.) got things started with a goal off an assist from Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.). Newall completed a hat trick with a marker at with 6:17 remaining in regulation. MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) scored for Curry with 5:53 left but two straight goals from Western New England pushed the lead back to 15-7. Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) registered the final tally for the Colonels to make the final score a seven goal deficit, 15-8.

In addition to Newell's hat trick DeLeary, Urbano, Fallon, Serra, and Cashin had single markers for Curry. Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) was credited with the loss in the cage, making three saves in 45 minutes of action. The win was awarded to Steven Kerr (Hopkinton, Mass.) as he registered 13 saves in 60 minutes.

Curry will next host Nichols College on Wednesday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. Western New England will return to action on Saturday, March 31 at the University of New England at 4:00 p.m.
