Men's Lacrosse Powers Past Norwich, 18-9

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team scored 10 of the first 11 goals en route to an 18-9 victory over Norwich University in a non-conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.

Nine players found the back of the cage for the Colonels (5-2 overall) on the day, led by five goals from Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) and four from MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.). Ryan Ofgant (Natick, Mass.) and Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) added two tallies while five others posted a goal apiece. Newell fueled the offense with four assists while Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) ended up with three helpers.

Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) recorded four goals and an assist to pace the Cadets (3-3 overall) while Josh Jenkins (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Chris Ward (Westfield, Mass.) each added a pair of two goals and an assist apiece. Matt Whear (Duxbury, Mass.) scooped up a team-high five ground balls and Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) went 10-for-25 in face-offs on the day.

Curry opened up a 4-1 lead in the first quarter as the three different players found the scoring column. Urbano and Fallon each scored in the five minutes of the contest as the Colonels jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Kennedy halted the mini-run when he found the back of the net with 4:25 left in the stanza off an assist from Ward. Curry netted the final two goals of the frame as Cashin finished off a pass from Newell while Urbano converted a goal off a helper from Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.).

The Colonels broke the contest open in the second frame, outscoring the Cadets 6-0. Urbano started the scoring with a tally at the 12:21 mark. Cashin and White got back-to-back goals just one second apart to extend the lead to six, 7-1. Exactly three minutes later, Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) put a shot past Brandon Milburn (Bridgewater, Mass.) off an assist from Newell. Newell then scored the final two goals of the quarter to give Curry the 10-1 lead into the halftime intermission.

The squads traded goals over the first 1:22 of the quarter to make the score, 12-2. Norwich then put together two straight markers, one each from Ward and Jenkins to trim the deficit to single deficits. The Colonels answered with two tallies of their own when Stebbins and DeLeary found the back of the net over the final 1:02 to extend the lead to 10, 14-4.

Ofgant got things started for Curry in the final quarter to push the lead to 11, 15-4. The Cadets found the answer when Ward converted a pass from Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.). The Colonels followed the tally with a 3-0 run, thanks to goals from Urbano and Newell. Norwich closed the gap over the final 5:51 of regulation with four straight tallies to make the final score, 18-9.

Curry goalie Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) logged 52:05 between the pipes and made 13 saves to earn his fifth win of the season. Mike Collins (Franklin, Mass.) also saw his second game action of the season in the cage and made six saves in 7:55. Milburn played the entire game and stopped 22 shots.

Zach White (Milford, Conn.) went 13-for-21 at the face-off spot and picked up 12 ground balls to lead the Colonels.

Mitchell will next travel to Western New England University in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener on Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. Norwich returns to action on Wednesday, March 28 at Emmanuel (Mass.) at 7:00 p.m.
