Men's Lacrosse Races Past Southern Maine, 19-6

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team picked up its fourth win in a row, getting by the University of Southern Maine by a 19-6 final on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Walter M. Katz Field.

Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) and Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) finished with three goals and two assists apiece for a game-high 5 points on the day. Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.), Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.), and Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) tallied two goals apiece while seven others had a single goal each.

Curry (4-2 overall) never trailed in the contest after putting up three goals in the first 11:43. Cashin put the Colonels on the scoreboard at the 9:34 mark of the opening stanza. Just 31 seconds later, the Huskies answered back with an unassisted marker from Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass.). Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) put the home squad back out in front, finishing off a pass from Stebbins. Southern Maine tied the game for the second time in the quarter as Leonardo netted his second goal of the game, this time off a helper from Steve Gilbert (Litchfield, Maine). Curry would then close the quarter with two straight goals, one apiece from Cashin and MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) to give the Colonels a 4-2 lead after one.

The Huskies (1-3 overall) kept it close as Leonardo found the back of the cage after and a goal from Stebbins to close the gap to 5-3. Curry closed the rest of the quarter on a 6-1 run to extend their advantage to 11-4 heading into the halftime intermission.

The Colonels continued its strong play in the third quarter, netting three goals, one each from Newell, Serra, and Chris Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.). Nate DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine) stopped the 6-0 run that nearly spanned a quarter of game action with a tally with 2:19 left in the frame. Curry had the answer when Stebbins put a shot past Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine) to give the hosts a 10 goal advantage with one quarter to play, 15-5.

The Colonels finished off its impressive performance, outscoring the Huskies 4-1 over the final stanza. Matthew Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.), Fallon, Tyler Price (Oakdale, Conn.) and Richard Robinson (Fairhaven, Mass.) scored in the fourth to give the Curry the 13 goal victory.

Curry with a 54-32 advantage in shots and won 18 of 27 face-offs. The Colonels also held a 37-23 edge in ground balls led by 11 from Zach White (Milford, Conn.). Curry went 3-for-9 with a man advantage.

Curry goalie Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) made seven saves to earn his fourth win of the season. Bessette finished with 14 saves in the loss.

The Colonels returns to action at home against Norwich University on Saturday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m. Southern Maine will next play at Saint Joseph's (Me.) on Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m.
