Newell Nets 100th Career Point in Men's Lacrosse Victory Over Castleton, 16-5

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team raced past Castleton University on Saturday afternoon by a final of 16-5 in their home opener at Walter M. Katz Field. The win moves the Colonels to 1-2 on the early season while the Spartans slip to 0-3.

Curry jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter to build the early advantage. Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) got things started for the Colonels when the senior finished off a pass from Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.), who recorded his 100th career point in the victory. Zach White (Milford, Conn.) continued the run for the home squad when he found the back of the net set up by a pass from Cameron Nigro (Scarborough, Maine). Two tallies from Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) and one from Newell put Curry up a five-spot after one quarter of play.

Castleton was able to get on the scoreboard in the second stanza when Kevin McCarthy (Sayville, N.Y.) converted a shot off a dish from Shane Centerbar (Burlington, Vt.), which made the score 5-1 with 13:48 left in the frame. The Colonels responded and put up four straight goals: one apiece from Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.), Nigro, Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) and Cashin. The four-goal run gave Curry a 9-1 advantage heading into the halftime intermission.

The third quarter was nearly evenly matched as the squads were separated by a goal. Urbano opened things for the Colonels but the score was quickly answered by McCarthy as the squads would trade goals over the final 10:16 as Curry carried a 12-3 lead with one quarter to go.

The Colonels opened the fourth quarter with four straight goals, three from Serra and one from Cashin to push the lead to 13 (16-3) with 4:47 left. The Spartans collected the final two tallies of the contest, but it was not enough as Curry took the contest by the 11-goal margin.

Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) collected the win in the cage as he registered six saves in just over 55 minutes of action. Brandon Myron (Rensselaer, N.Y.) was credited the loss, making 20 saves on 34 shots faced.

Newell led the Colonels with seven points on three goals and four assists. Serra put up six points with four goals and two assists while Cashin contributed a hat trick to highlight the point leaders for Curry. McCarthy had a team-high four points on four goals for Castleton.
