Late Run Not Enough As Babson Tops Men's Lacrosse, 15-11

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team dropped a close 15-11 decision to Babson College in a road contest at the MacDowell Field on Tuesday afternoon. The win pushes the Beavers to 2-2 on the season while the Colonels dip to 0-2.

Babson got on the board first with an unassisted goal from Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) at the 12:35 mark to put the home squad up, 1-0. Curry would then jump on the scoreboard with two straight tallies, one apiece from Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) assisted by Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) and then Cashin recorded his second point on a goal off a helper from MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) to put the Colonels up by a goal with 6:02 left in the frame. The Beavers halted the mini-run when O'Hanlon found the net for the second time in the frame, with 3:24 left in the stanza, once again unassisted. Curry then scored two goals over the final 2:07 of the quarter, the first from Newell followed by Urbano with just 47 ticks on the clock as the Colonels led at the end of one, 4-2.

Babson responded in the second quarter with three straight goals, the first two off the stick of Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) followed by a single tally from Evan Carpenter (Orlando, Fla.) to jump in front, 5-4 with 3:34 remaining in the half. Cashin nixed the run when he found the back of the net with 1:33 left to even the score at five, but the Beavers scored once more when Mishkind put a shot past Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) with 23 seconds left to give the home team a one goal lead heading into the intermission, 6-5.

Babson came out of the locker room at the half and outscored Curry 5-0 in the third quarter to grab an 11-5 lead. O'Hanlon and Miskind tallied the first two goals of the period while Axel Brown (Little Compton, R.I.), Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.), and Carpenter all had markers to put the Beavers up by six going into the final stanza, 11-5.

The Colonels went on to outscore Babson in the final quarter of play, 6-4 but the late charge was not enough. Newell put Curry in the scoring column in the frame with a tally off a pass from Cashin. The Beavers came back with two of their own from the sticks of Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.) and Mishkind, both of which were unassisted to double up the Colonels, 14-7. Urbano put an end to the mini spurt with a goal at the 9:34 mark to pull Curry to within six. Babson then responded with two straight goal before the Colonels rattled off four straight, two from Urbano and one apiece from Cashin and Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.). The late charge wasn't enough as the Beavers took the contest by a four-goal margin, 15-11.

Curry was paced by Cashin and Urbano, who finished the contest with five points each. Urbano put up four goals and one assist while Cashin registered a hat trick plus two assists. Newell added a hat trick and Serra closed out the scoring column with a goal.

Mishkind put up a game-high seven points on six goals and one assist to lead Babson. O'Hanlon ranked second on the team with four points on four goals while Allen, Brown, Dillon, and Carpenter all recorded points for the Beavers.

Mac Mowat (Bellevue, Wash.) registered the win in goal, playing 8:35 of game action while making two saves. Teller was credited the loss as he made eight saves in 30 minutes.

Curry will open its 2018 home slate on Saturday, March 10 as they welcome in Castleton University for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference game. Babson will host Rensselaer on Saturday at noon for their next contest.
