Men's Lacrosse Edged By Salve Regina in Conference Play, 9-7

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team dropped a close 9-7 decision to Salve Regina University in a road contest at the Lawrence Avenue Field. The win moves the Seahawks to 8-8 overall and 2-5 in the CCC. The loss drops the Colonels to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in league games with the result.

Salve Regina got on the board first with an unassisted goal from Matt Ikawa (Hampton, N.H.), just 14 seconds into the contest. Curry then responded with two straight tallies to grab a 2-1 lead. Dominick Marcella (Hull, Mass.) and Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) netted unassisted goals 53 second apart from one another to give the Colonels a one goal advantage. The Seahawks knotted up the contest with 1:22 left in the stanza when Nick LoCicero (Lynbrook, N.Y.) found the back of the net as the first quarter ended in a 2-2 tie.

Salve Regina netted the first two goals of the second quarter, the first off the stick from Ethan Robson (Lincoln, R.I.) and the second from Eric Backus (Mansfield, Mass.). Both tallies were assisted by LoCicero as the Seahawks grabbed a 4-2 lead. But Curry would respond with three straight goals. Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) started the mini run that spanned the final 6:06 of the half with a goal off an assist from Wade Prajer (Southbury, Conn.) to pull the Colonels to within one at 4-3. Prajer was in the action nearly four minutes later when he found Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.). Curry would carry a one goal lead at 5-4 into the halftime intermission, thanks to a goal by Cam Gainey (Truro, Mass.) with just one second left in the stanza.

The Seahawks came out of the locker room at the half and scored the first two goals of the second quarter. Backus got things started when he found the back of the net at the 12:09 mark to knot the game at five. They grabbed the lead after Andrew Fera (Cranston, R.I.) netted a goal on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Zach Makoske (Shoreham, N.Y.). Curry answered back just one minute and 26 seconds later when Cashin scored his second of the day to tie the contest at six. The back-and-forth contest swayed in favor of Salve Regina when with 3:45 left in the third, LoCicero gave the Seahawks a 7-6 lead on his fourth point of the afternoon.

The Seahawks then opened the final quarter of action with two straight goals to grab a 9-6 lead. Alex Makoske (Shoreham, N.Y.) found the back of the net off an assist from LoCicero and then Matt Heeter (Wading River, N.Y.) scored to give Salve Regina a three goal advantage. Cashin would tally one more before the end of the contest when he scored to cap a hat trick with 5:33 remaining to make it a 9-7 final.

The Colonels were led by Cashin, who finished with a hat trick for three points. Serra, Newell, Gainey and Marcella each had a goal apiece to close out the scoring for Curry. Prajer added two assists while Shane O'Brien (East Falmouth, Mass.) paced the visitors with eight groundballs.

Backus and LoCicero registered two goals apiece to lead Salve Regina. Five others tallied single goals for the Seahawks to close the column for the home team. Jake Gonazlez (Tolland, Conn.) led Salve Regina with six groundballs.

Matt D'Amore (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up the win in the cage, going 60 minutes while making 11 saves. O'Brien was credited the loss as he made 19 saves in 60 minutes.

Curry closes out the regular season with a Tuesday home matchup with the University of New England at 7:00 p.m. Salve Regina heads to Western New England on Tuesday for a conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
