Men's Lacrosse Downs Gordon College 17-9 in CCC Action

WENHAM, Mass.— A 7-0 run to end the game for visiting Curry spoiled Gordon's Senior Day festivities in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday. Gordon closed a six-goal gap to 10-9 with only a few minutes remaining before the Colonels pulled away 17-9 at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

The Fighting Scots' faint playoff hopes were officially dashed by the Colonels as Gordon falls to 1-6 in CCC play and 1-13 overall. Curry improves its ledger to 2-5 in the conference and 10-6 overall.

Curry and Gordon traded goals over the first few minutes, but the Colonels answered quickly following Nico Manganiello's (Peabody, Mass.) put in to go up 2-1.  MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) put home his second goal in a 30-second span with a man-up strike to make it 3-1.

Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) got one back before the end of the first for a 3-2 score after 15 minutes.

Gordon and Curry countered each other with a two-goal run to keep the difference at one goal, but the Colonels scored three times in the final five minutes of the half, including Urbano's third goal, to take an 8-4 lead at intermission.

Curry received two goals from leading scorer Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) in the first two minutes of the third period to extend the lead to six goals.

However, Gordon went on a lengthy 5-0 stretch that spanned across 11 minutes of game play. Manganiello and Evans both completed hat-tricks during the run for Gordon.

Gordon looked intent on tying the game for the first time since 1-1, but Curry had other ideas. The visitors scored two scrappy goals off groundball pickups in front of the target to end the third, both by Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.).

Curry shut the Scots out in the fourth quarter and scored five more unanswered goals to end the game. Newell and Serra finished the game with four goals apiece as each offensive player scored twice in the fourth.

The Colonels took 17 of 28 face offs in the game and scored four times in power play situations. Curry also held  a larger 33-22 advantage in groundballs.

Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) made 14 saves on the day for the Fighting Scots. Shane O'Brien (East Falmouth, Mass.) got his eight win in between the pipes, making 12 stops.

Steve Grogan (Sandwich, Mass.) led all players with nine groundballs.

Gordon closes out its regular season on Tuesday at Western New England. Curry hosts Roger Williams on the same day. (Game Recap Courtesy of Gordon Sports Information)
