Men's Lacrosse Handles Visiting Wheelock College 19-4 in Non-Conference Play

MILTON, Mass. - In a non-conference match up in men's lacrosse on Tuesday afternoon, Curry College defeated Wheelock College, 19-4. With the win the Colonels improve to 3-0 on the season while the Wildcats fell to 1-2 overall in the loss.

Curry was led by junior Brandon Flaim (Pembroke, Mass.) who scored five goals and was followed closely by sophomore Jeffrey Yates (Albany, N.Y.) who netted three goals and added an assist. Freshman Ed Johnson (Woburn, Mass.) recorded three goals, including the last two of the game which came mere seconds apart.

Wheelock had four different goal scorers for each of their goals and freshman Noah Horning (Brookline, Mass.) led the team with five ground balls.

Five other colonels recorded goals including sophomore Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) who led the game with three assists on top of his goal. Senior Joe Shea (Arlington, Mass.) tallied three goals and also worked an assist. Junior classmates Dominick Marcella (Hull, Mass.) and Jack McMenomey (West Linn, Org.) along with freshman Zach White (Milford, Conn.) all scored once.

The Wildcats goals came from a pair of freshman and juniors, starting with Brian Peatfield (Weymouth, Mass.) and Keenan Brown (Salem, Mass.) representing the freshman class. Matt White (Milford, Conn.) and Eddie Romero (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) were the juniors and Romero came out with a team second-best three ground balls.

Shea started things early with a goal five and a half minutes into the game and added an assist just three minutes later on Yates' first goal. Yates would go on to score again with 34 seconds left in the quarter and assisted White on his goal which ended the scoring in the first frame. Junior Shane O'Brien (East Falmouth, Mass.) let up an off-angle bounce shot from Peatfield to get Wheelock on the board finally. White added onto it almost three minutes later, but Shea responded with two more goals, sandwiched on either end by goals from Yates to bring the score to 11-2 with a minute and a half in the first half.  Brown scored once more for the Wildcats to put the first half score at 11-3.

Johnson opened and closed the scoring for the second half, opening with a goal at 13:08 and closing it out with another one at 0:27. After a McMenomey tally in the third, Flaim scored three straight goals, one to close out the scoring in the third, and the final two opening the scoring in the fourth. Romero answered only to have three more Curry goals go past, including another one from Flaim and an additional pair from Johnson to put the final score at 19-4.

O'Brien picked up the win in net with five saves while Horning earned the loss in a 17 save effort.

The Colonels led in ground balls at 49-20, earned 20 out of 25 face-off wins and had 17 successful clears on 19 attempts.  They also led in shots with 56-19.

The Colonels return to non-conference action Friday afternoon as they host Norwich University at 3:30 p.m. and Wheelock are set to play another road game out of conference as they travel to Thomas College for a 3:30 p.m. start.
