MILTON, Mass. – Curry College lost to Commonwealth Coast Conference visitor Wentworth, 16-11 in on Saturday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field. The Colonels fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the CCC while the Leopards improved to 6-2 and 2-1 in the conference.
Senior Ronald Jensen (Zionsville, Ind.) and freshman Chris Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.) led the Colonels with three points each. Jensen netted two goals and chipped in with one assist while Bronander tallied one score and helped on two. Sophomores Joseph Grogan (Sandwich, Mass.) and Brandon Flaim (Pembroke, Mass.) and freshman Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) finished with two points apiece. Sophomore Kevin Vincens (Ellington, Conn.) and freshman Jeffrey Yates (Albany, N.Y.) each netted one goal.
The Leopards sophomore Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) had a game-high nine points on six goals and three assists. Junior Alex Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) tallied four goals and chipped in with two assists for six points and senior Mike Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) recorded five points on two tallies and three helpers. Junior Nick Parent (Windham, Mass.) netted two goals and senior Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) had one.
Curry was first to get on the board at 11:24 on an unassisted goal by Bronander. Wentworth responded with five of its own to take a 5-1 lead heading into the second period. The Leopards got two scores from Paradis and one each from Coakley, Cushera and Parent. Cushera also assisted on two while Paradis and freshman Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Maine) helped on one.
Wentworth outscored Curry 5-1 in the second to head into half time with a 10-2 advantage. Coakley had five points in the second on two goals and three assists. Cushera had a net and a helper and Paradis had two tallies. The Colonels lone goal was an unassisted score by Grogan.
The third period saw just two scores both by the Leopards. Coakley netted both on assists from Butler and Paradis.
The final period saw 12 total goals, eight by the Colonels and four from the Leopards. Wentworth netted the first three goals in a three minute span off the sticks of Parent, Coakley and freshman Jake Ollila (Goffstown, N.H.). Curry then went on to score six goals in a strong effort to chip away at the Leopards lead. Jensen tallied two goals and chipped in with an assist, Serra netted two and Flaim one off a helper by Bronander. Lynch had Wentworth's final goal of the game to secure the 16-10 victory. Before the horn the Colonels saw scores from Flaim off an assist by Bronander and Vincens from Grogan.
Wentworth outshot Curry 47-25 and held a 34-24 advantage in ground balls. The Colonels went 12 for 28 on face-offs and 14-17 on clears. The Leopards went 16 for 28 at the face-off X and was successful on 12 of 16 clears.
Curry's' sophomore goaltender Shane O'Brien (East Falmouth, Mass.) made four saves and allowed five goals in 15 minutes of play before giving way to senior Daniel Martin (Pittsfield, Mass.) who made 15 stops in 45 minutes. Wentworth played three netminders. Freshman Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) played strong between the pipes making nine saves and allowing six goals in 51:30 minutes. Sophomore Nick Miller (Malverne, N.Y.) made one save and allowed two goals in 7:14 minutes and freshman Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) made one stop and allowed two goals in 1:16 minutes.
The Colonels are next in action when they travel to Nichols College on Tuesday, March 31 at 7 p.m. The Leopards will host Endicott College on Wednesday, March 31 at 7 p.m.
