Men's Lacrosse Absorbs an 8-4 Loss at Norwich University

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's lacrosse team held Curry College scoreless for the final 18-minutes, 38-seconds of regulation on Wednesday afternoon at Sabine Field, and the Cadets picked up their first win over Curry College with an 8-4 victory to extend their winning streak to five on the year.

Norwich's (5-1) last victory in the series came in 1991 when the Cadets beat the Colonels, 19-8. The previous two games however had been decided by only eight goals with Curry winning the past two seasons.

Curry (3-4) would get on the board first at the 9:59 mark before Norwich tallied its first goal a minute later as senior attackman Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) retrieved the pass from junior midfielder Jimmy Warden (North Andover, Mass.) and drilled the ball into the back of the net to tie it up at one-all.

The Colonels would score two goals in the first period, one on a man-up opportunity before the Cadets rebounded by scoring three unanswered goals, all in the second period, from freshman Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.), Warden, and freshman Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) to take the 4-3 lead for the first time in the game. Both teams would battle it out before the break, but the Cadets held their ground, holding Curry scoreless in the next 18 minutes, allowing just eight shots, before the horn signaled the end of the first half.

Curry's Joseph Grogan (Sandwich, Mass.) would snap the scoreless skid early in the third period to knot the board at four goals apiece. That, however, was the last goal Curry would score in the game.  Cadets' goalkeeper Ryan Fecteau (Danvers, Mass.) made seven of his 11 saves in the final half, and the rest of the Colonels' 13 shots went off goal.

Freshman midfielder Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) scored his first goal of the game on a pass from Warden to start the Cadets' three-goal barrage. Fuller would pick up a pair of assists on goals from Warden and Matt Flaherty (Portland, Maine) to make it 7-4, Norwich. Utilizing a man-up opportunity, Cashman feed senior midfielder C.J. Dolan (East Sandwich, Mass.) a hard pass in front of the crease as Dolan  quickly pulled the trigger and made the behind the back shot that found the net for the final 8-4 score.

The Colonels outshot Norwich 34-26 in the game, but the Cadets held them to a .117 shooting percentage in the game. Senior faceoff specialist Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.) would win 66.7 percent of the faceoffs (8-12) as Curry's Steven Grogan (Sandwich, Mass.) would win the remaining five.

On the defensive end, Fecteau led the team with 10 ground balls and 11 saves in between the pipes, while freshman defender Zach Alder (Stratham, N.H.) caused three turnovers and Andrew Beechinor (Andover, Mass.)  with two.

Curry's Connor McKeon (Larchmont, N.Y.) and Grogan both scored a pair of goals for the Colonels as netminder Shane O'Brien (East Falmouth, Mass.) turned away six shots for the loss.

The Cadets will return to action on Saturday when they host the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) defending champions, Emmanuel College, for the 1:00 p.m. matchup at Sabine Field.   The Colonels will return to action on Saturday when they host Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Wentworth in a 12:00 p.m. game time.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Norwich Sports Information)
