Men's Lacrosse Falls to #10 Nationally-Ranked Montclair State, 19-9

MILTON, Mass. – In a non-conference match up in men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon, Curry College lost to #10 Nationally-Ranked Montclair State, 19-9. The Colonels fell to 5-3 overall in the loss while the Red Hawks improved to 7-1. 

Curry was led by John McMenomey (West Linn, Ore.) who netted three goals and chipped in with two assists for five points.  Ronald Jensen (Zionsville, Ind.) finished with four assists and Kevin Vincens (Ellington, Conn.) tallied three points on three goals for the Colonels. 

Montclair State was led by Brett Mangan (Maplewood, N.J.) who scored five times and added two assists to lead all scorers with seven points. Alex Hahn (Hackettstown, N.J.) scored three times and Griffin Woodfinelvine (Morristown, N.J.) and Steve Danyluk (Raritan, N.J.) each added two for the Red Hawks.


Montclair scored seven of their 19 goals in the opening stanza.  Mangan netted the first two goals for the Red Hawks staking them to a 2-0 lead in the first 2:33 of the game. Just 42 seconds later, Joel Van Der Wal (Columbia, N.J.) gave Montclair a three-goal advantage. Danyluk collected the first of his two goals with 10:32 to play with Sam Morrissey (Hackettstown, N.J.) and Mangan scoring less than a minute apart to go up 6-0. Danyluk capped off the period with his second tally with 3:27 remaining.

Montclair kept the scoring going in the second, netting four more for an 11-0 run. Jake Haimson (Montville, NJ, Montville) scored the first goal and Connor Cunnignham (Jackson, N.J.) had an unassisted marker with 9:29 to go. Woodfinlevine scored his first 59 seconds later and a goal by Dylan Henignburg (Maplewood, N.J.) pushed the lead to 11 goals before Curry would get on the board.  McMenomey tallied his first of three on the day unassisted.  The Red Hawks answered back 43 seconds later but the Colonels ended the half on a score from Vincens who was assisted by McMenomey.

The Red Hawks opened the second half just six seconds in on an unassisted marker by Haimson. McMenomey earned his second with 9:09 showing on the clock but Montclair got back-to-back tallies from Hahn. Mangan and Zach Schreck (Flemington, N.J.) were credited with assists.  Vincens had the last score on a McMenomey helper.

The final period saw a total of nine goals.  The Colonels outscored the Red Hawks 5-4 in the final 15 minutes of play.  Curry struck first off a goal by Harrison Foster (Saddle River, N.J.) with Jensen chipping in with his first of four assists in the frame.  Woodfinlevine answered back for Montclair before each team netted three goals apiece over a span of eight minutes.  Vincens, Arnold and McMenomey put up goals for the Colonels while Mangan tallied two and Morrissey one for the Red Hawks.  Jensen found Arnold with 1:48 left to play for the final point of day.   

Montclair outshot Curry 44-23 in the game.  The Red Hawks were also successful on the face-off with a 22-11 advantage in wins and scooped up 28 ground balls with Curry grabbing 16. 

The Colonels played two goaltenders over 60 minutes.  Tim McNair (Wilmette, Ill.) made 10 saves, allowing 12 goals in 25:28 minutes.  Shane O'Brien (East Falmouth, Mass.) made three saves, allowing seven goals in 34:32 minutes.  For the Red Hawks, Michael Dorn (Blairstown, N.J.) made two saves for the win.


Curry is back in action on Wednesday, March 26 when they open conference play hosting Salve Regina in a 4:00 p.m. start.  Montclair hosts Mt. Saint Mary in a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, March 29.
